The reason why Arsenal will not wear new home kit on final game for first time since 2021

Premier League clubs have recently started wearing their newly released kits on the final day of the season, but Arsenal will not be partaking in this trend.

In recent years, some clubs have decided to release their new kits before the end of the season, and show them off in their final home game.

Arsenal today released their new kit for the 2024-25 season, but some fans were disappointed with the design, with the colours blue and white featuring more than desired.

In the past two seasons, Arsenal followed the trend of giving the new kit its debut in the season finale, allowing supporters to see it in action before the summer break, but despite announcing their new kit, the players will have to wait until pre-season before they can debut it.

Arsenal are still in the title race going into the final game, with Mikel Arteta’s side now relying on West Ham to take points off Manchester City.

Although unlikely, the possibility of Arsenal lifting a first Premier League title since 2004 still remains, and the club have now decided that they would want to be in the current season’s kit for the final game of what has been a strong season.

Some fans have speculated about a Premier League rule being implemented to make Arsenal wear their current kit given their position in the title race, but there is no such rule.

Arsenal have simply decided themselves, that the 2023-24 kit will get one last run out as they draw the season to a close.

The only rules that apply over a club choosing to use their new kits, are that they must give 14 days prior notice of their intention to change, and that the new strip will then be registered for the following season.

This means that clubs cannot bring out a one-off strip for the final game, and they must plan their intention to change in advance regardless of how the title race would then play out.

Arsenal first debuted a new kit ahead of the following season in the 2019-20 season, as they wore the 2020-21 home kit in the FA Cup final.

The Gunners won, with a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brace downing Chelsea, but in years to come, there could be some confusion looking back on footage of the game, given that the kit from the wrong season has been used.

They did not continue this trend in 2021, as the final day saw Arsenal record a 2-0 victory over Brighton, with Nicolas Pepe scoring a double, and they wore their usual kit in what was ultimately a dead-rubber game.

In 2022, Arsenal were in with an outside chance of a top-four spot, but despite beating Everton 5-1, they could not overtake Tottenham Hotspur. Nevertheless, there was a positive atmosphere on the day, and the Gunners debuted the kit they would wear for the following season, which proved to be an eventful one.

Arsenal saw their title challenge collapse before the final day last season, but it was a year of progress, and there was a buzz inside the Emirates when Granit Xhaka scored a brace in a 5-0 victory over Wolves, in the kit that they would wear in this campaign.

This means that despite Xhaka departing in the summer, he wore the kit that could go down in history if Arsenal do win the title.

Although giving the new kit more exposure could be beneficial from a marketing standpoint, some may prefer if the correct jerseys were worn in the correct seasons.
