Report shares the 1 thing that Tim Steidten really didn't like about the Kalvin Phillips deal

West Ham United director of football Tim Steidten wasn’t keen about one specific thing involving the deal to sign Kalvin Phillips.

Kalvin Phillips joined West Ham on loan from Manchester City in the January transfer window, but Tim Steidten clearly wasn’t happy with the deal.

It was David Moyes who reportedly pushed hard to bring the 28-year-old midfielder to the London Stadium four months ago.

The Englishman has been at fault for numerous goals we’ve conceded since the end of January – Bournemouth at home and Manchester United away spring to mind.

Phillips got sent off away at Nottingham Forest and gave away a penalty at a crucial time up at St James’ Park in March.

One talkSPORT pundit even suggested that he should personally refund the Hammers after ‘sabotaging’ our season.

His move to West Ham has been an unmitigated disaster from start to finish. Now, a West Ham reporter has offered further insight into the power struggle behind the scenes that led up to the Phillips signing…

One thing Tim Steidten didn’t like about Kalvin Phillips deal

The German took over as the Hammers’ director of football back in July of 2023.

He has made an instant impact at the club, and brought some fantastic signings to the London Stadium, including the likes of Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus.

However, there was one deal that he wasn’t particularly keen on.

The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has lifted the lid on something specific that Steidten really didn’t like about the deal to bring Phillips to the London Stadium in January:

Thomas explained, “Moyes and Steidten often disagreed on transfer targets. In January, Moyes pushed hard to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City with no option to buy. Steidten never favoured loan deals with no option to buy. Phillips made three starts and returned to Manchester City having sustained a calf injury in training.”

The funny thing here is, having an option to buy Phillips would have made no difference whatsoever.

The 28-year-old proved to be nothing more than a terrible signing for us – potentially our worst of all-time.

There is no way that Tim Steidten would have been pushing for West Ham to sign Kalvin Phillips.

The Man City owned midfielder was a Moyes signing all day long, and it was arguably the transfer that ended up costing the Scot his job.
