'Believe so': Journalist confirms Sheffield Wednesday interest in £2.3m summer transfer target

Sheffield Wednesday have seen their interest in this £2.3million striker confirmed by Alan Nixon.

Sheffield Wednesday appear to be putting plans in place for a busy summer transfer window, with several names already on their radar.

Danny Rohl wants to see January loan trio James Beadle, Ian Poveda, and Ike Ugbo return to the club; the latter two on permanent deals.

Beadle would be a loan deal, and Sheffield Wednesday News have recently revealed that Beadle will leave Brighton on loan this summer, despite the Seagull’s complicated goalkeeper situation.

Poveda meanwhile has interest from elsewhere in the Championship whilst a move for Ugbo appears to be waiting on his parent club Troyes and their fate in Ligue 2 this season.

Another name on the Owls’ summer wishlist is Duncan McGuire; Wednesday tried and failed to sign the Orlando City striker in January, but have reportedly kept tabs on him since.

Blackburn Rovers are also back in for the 23-year-old after a paperwork error meant that McGuire’s January move to Ewood Park fell through.

McGuire recently said that it would ‘take a lot’ for him to return to Lancashire this summer, but that he’d be open to having a conversation with the club.

Alan Nixon confirms Sheffield Wednesday interest in Duncan McGuire

Now, journalist Nixon has confirmed Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in USMNT striker McGuire, who’s scored five goals in 11 MLS outings so far in the 2024 season.

When asked if Sheffield Wednesday are back in for McGuire this summer, Nixon replied: “Believe so.”

Nixon also commented on Blackburn reigniting their interest in McGuire, suggesting that Rovers or indeed any other club would have to buy McGuire this summer rather than make a loan offer.

He’s out of contract at the end of this year, though Orlando are working on a potential new deal.

On deadline day of the winter transfer window, Blackburn Rovers had initially agreed a £2.3million deal to sign McGuire before it fell through, with Rovers then forging a loan-to-buy deal at the last minute which again fell through.

Sheffield Wednesday facing expensive transfer decision

Sheffield Wednesday appear to have two strikers firmly on their sights this summer; McGuire and Ugbo.

Both offer huge potential for the Owls but both look like they could be quite expensive purchases for the club, and so it’s one that they’ll have to really weigh up.

Expect Wednesday to wait to find out what the situation is with Ugbo’s parent club Troyes and then what the situation is with Ugbo himself.

But by the time Sheffield Wednesday discover his fate, McGuire may well have been snapped up, and if McGuire is the one that Rohl wants then they may have to act now.

But signing McGuire may mean not signing Ugbo, or not signing any other players for substantial transfer fees.

£2.3million was the price reported in January and with interest in McGuire from Europe as well, and with the striker having started this season strongly, that price may have gone up, all but putting Wednesday out of the race for his signature.

But they’re clearly keen, as per Nixon on X, and the Owls could surprise us all and splash out on what would be a marquee signing for the club.

Either way, it needs to be an ambitious summer in S6.
