Key Arsenal figure is 'not under consideration' for manager job despite previous links

Mikel Arteta has been a success in his time as Arsenal manager, and his coaching staff have also earned a lot of credit under his leadership.

Set-piece coach Nicolas Jover has been hailed for the impact he has made in turning Arsenal into the best side in the league when it comes to both attacking and defending dead-ball situations, whilst Arteta’s main assistant Albert Stuivenberg has been linked with top jobs in the Netherlands.

One of Arteta’s most impressive coaches is Carlos Cuesta, who has caught the eye given his young age as one of the Spaniard’s key backroom staff.

Cuesta, who has previously worked for Juventus and Atletico Madrid, was linked with the managerial job at Norwich earlier this season, and with the Canaries choosing to fire manager David Wagner after their playoff defeat to Leeds United, he may have been in contention to replace him.

Norwich City will not consider Arsenal staff member Carlos Cuesta for managerial role

Despite previous links with the job at Carrow Road, it has now been reported by The Telegraph that Cuesta is not currently in contention to replace Wagner at the Championship side.

“Carlos Cuesta, the Arsenal first-team coach, is not understood to be under consideration,” the report stated.

The links came about previously as former Arsenal loan manager Ben Knapper became sporting director of Norwich in November 2023, and it was mooted that he was keen on bringing his former colleague with him.

At just 28 years of age, Cuesta is younger than some of the players he has been coaching at Arsenal, but he is emerging as one of the brightest talents in his field.

Cuesta first started coaching in the Atletico Madrid under-17s in 2014, before moving to the same role at Juventus in 2018.

The Spaniard then joined Arteta’s staff in 2020, and earlier this season Arteta admitted that he could not stop him from leaving if an offer from Norwich came in.

“If that’s their will? You cannot [stop them]. I wouldn’t, no,” he stated in February.

“That’s great what has happened, not only with the coaching staff but also certain staff, that other clubs are trying to come and get them which is always a really good sign that they’re doing a really good job.”

It will come as some relief to Arteta that he is not about to lose one of his key assistants, but it does feel inevitable that Cuesta will eventually move to a more senior coaching position elsewhere within the next few years as he takes the next step in his career.
