£100k-a-week Everton star made Premier League history against Sheffield United

Everton defender James Tarkowski made Premier League history during the Toffees’ 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

Abdoulaye Doucoure was the matchwinner for Sean Dyche’s men as the Blues signed off their home campaign with a fifth straight victory at Goodison Park.

The win over the Blades also saw the Toffees land their 13th clean sheet of the season, which is only bettered by Sunday’s opponents, Arsenal.

Tarkowski has been a massive part of Everton’s defensive success and has now achieved a Premier League first.

As highlighted by Everton’s official website, the £100,000-a-week defender has amassed 50 blocks during the season.

Crucially, Tarkowski has become the first player to amass 50 blocks for three seasons in a row. Last year, the former Burnley defender managed to register 76 blocks.

The 31-year-old’s feat is even more remarkable when looking at just how far clear he is in the standings.

Wolves’ Craig Dawson is next on the list at 39, 15 blocks shy of the Everton man. Last season, it was a similar story, with Max Kilman sitting 34 blocks adrift.

James Tarkowski’s performances rightfully lauded this season

Tarkowski’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed. Along with Branthwaite, pundits far and wide have heaped praise on the Everton duo.

Speaking on the Rest is Football Podcast, Micah Richards said: “We know we talked about Branthwaite and he has been outstanding this season, but we have to talk about his partner alongside him, Tarkowski. I mean, he has been so consistent.”

Gary Lineker was also quick to mention the Everton star’s performances.

When Tarkowski signed for Everton, there were question marks over just how much of an impact he would make at Goodison Park. Signing an ageing player on big wages was always a risk; however, it’s a decision that has paid off massively.

If the club can keep hold of Branthwaite this summer, the Toffees’ central defensive pairing will have a massive part to play heading into the 2024/25 campaign.
