Paul Merson names Jurgen Klopp's 'greatest achievement' during his time as Liverpool manager

After eight years, seven months and eleven days, Liverpool will wave goodbye to Jurgen Klopp on Sunday.

In truth it feels almost surreal, but here we are. In just three days Klopp will no longer be manager of Liverpool. A new era beckons.

Naturally, the past few days and weeks have been full of people looking back on the German’s excellent time at Liverpool. Klopp himself has been a part of that, naming his favourite game as Reds’ boss ahead of Sunday’s finale.

With so much to enjoy about the 56-year-old’s stint at Anfield, it can be hard to pinpoint one match, one moment or trophy as his greatest achievement.

But looking back on Klopp’s Liverpool days for Sportskeeda, pundit Paul Merson is in no doubt what the boss will always be remembered for.

Paul Merson names Jurgen Klopp’s ‘greatest achievement’

Ask Liverpool supporters, and they’ll quite possibly tell you that the best thing about the Klopp era has been nothing to do with the football.

Of course, it’s the reason we’re all here in the first place and winning trophies and playing lovely stuff on the pitch always helps. But it isn’t why Jurgen is loved in the way that he is.

Instead, the manager is revered for the way he united the club from top to bottom. There have been tough periods within the Klopp years, but you always knew that with Jurgen at the helm, things would be alright.

Nevertheless, the boss wouldn’t have lasted as long as he has were it not for success on the field. And according to Merson, taking on – and beating – the Man City juggernaut will always be the biggest feather in Jurgen’s cap.

“I can’t see anything but a Liverpool win,” said the former England midfielder of Sunday’s game against Wolves. “The players will want to give Jurgen Klopp the send-off he deserves. The atmosphere at Anfield will be electric and they will honour someone who breathed new life into the club and won them the Premier League title after 30 years.

“Liverpool were crying out for a personality like Klopp and his greatest achievement will be beating this Manchester City side to a league title.”

What is Jurgen Klopp’s biggest success at Liverpool

We know where Merson is coming from with this. As Arsenal are learning for themselves, it isn’t easy to stop Man City. A win on Sunday will make it six titles out of seven for Pep Guardiola’s team.

When a team is that dominant, extra emphasis should always be placed on the one’s who managed to stop them. Liverpool so very nearly did it three times.

That is undoubtedly huge credit to Klopp and will likely only look better as time passes further.

For us though, we still maintain that Jurgen’s biggest success was his ability to turn Liverpool into a genuine giant of European football once again.

The Reds are now one of the continent’s elite, and it’s all down to his genius. This is going to hurt.
