'He has to': Micah Richards urges England not to ignore 'unbelievable' Newcastle star

Newcastle United are about to finish what has been a gruelling season.

Eddie Howe takes his team to Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday and briefly over to Australia for a post-season tour.

After that, at least some of the Newcastle squad will be able to rest.

That isn’t the case for all of them, however.

Indeed, the fact there is a European Championship and a Copa America this summer means some of Howe’s squad will be heading into some of the biggest tournaments of their lives.

One of those could be well Anthony Gordon.

The winger has shone this season, scoring 12 goals and registering 11 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions.

He’s been billed as one of the division’s standout players and was rewarded for his fine form with an England debut back in March.

Such are the vast array of options available to Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024, however, it remains to be seen whether or not the 23-year-old will be in the provisional Three Lions squad named on Tuesday.

Debate over who should and shouldn’t go will likely rage on until that point but pundit Micah Richards has pleaded with Southgate to take Gordon.

Micah Richards says Anthony Gordon simply has to start for England at Euro 2024

In fact, the former England defender believes Gordon simply has to start on the left-hand side of the attack at the Euros.

Speaking on the Rest is Football Podcast on Friday 17th May, 2024, Richards said: “Gordon has to play on the left.

“He is unbelievable, Gordon.

“He can do everything. He can work hard, he can make runs in behind, he can get hold of the ball, he can play up-front if needs be as well. He has to start on the left for England, he has to.”

What Gareth Southgate has already said about Anthony Gordon and England

Speaking back in March, Southgate offered a decent enough appraisal of Gordon’s first 75 minutes as an England player against Brazil at Wembley.

He even suggested it looked as if the former Everton winger had already played a number of games at international level, such was the level of his composure.

“I thought Anthony Gordon had been in an England shirt for a long time,” he said.

“He looked settled with it, a couple of attempts on goal – he took his club form into an England shirt.”
