North Bergen man charged in murder-for-hire scheme

A North Bergen man who attempted to hire a person to murder a woman has been arrested after police were tipped off, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

Miguel Cortes, 37, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, a first-degree offense after his arrest outside his Paterson Plank Road home by the prosecutor’s office’s Major Case Unit Tuesday.

The state has filed a motion for detention, tentatively scheduled for Monday.

The North Bergen Police Department received a tip on May 9 of a possible murder-for-hire scheme, Suarez said. The investigation found Cortes offered money to another person to murder a woman known to Cortes.

The intended victim was not injured. The prosecutor’s office did not provide information on the relationship between Cortes and the victim.

Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Case Unit and the North Bergen Police Department with the investigation and arrest.
