Dinky ‘Mini G’ arrives in style at Grand Arcade

A new ‘Mini G’ decorated by cult artists Dinky Doors joined the giraffe sculpture trail Cambridge Standing Tall at the Grand Arcade last Wednesday (8 May).

The mysterious creation, known for his golden looks, is a Dinky version of the robot big giraffe, Metropogiraffolis, who is also featured in the trail.

Arriving by vintage Bentley with his own security – and played in by the Cambridge University Band – Dinky Doors has said that Metropogiraffolis’s Mini G is his “stunt double who often stands in for him when he is tied up”.

They have also said that Metropogiraffolis is a robot actor under the control of legendary director Fritz Lang.

‘Doorky’ said: “It was quite surreal actually. We – or was it us? – went for a ride around the centre of Cambridge before turning up at the Grand Arcade, where we had the Mini G stuck out of the sunroof. And there were people waving at us and taking lots of photos.”

‘Dinky’ added: “The idea of releasing the Mini G now was to try and bring attention to the tour, because it’s halfway through, I think.”

The Mini G was dressed up as if he were attending the Oscars, in place of the Big G who is “too big to fit through most of the doors at the Oscars ceremony”.

The Mini G can be seen in the Grand Arcade until the trail, featuring 31 full-sized giraffes and more than 60 Mini Gs, comes to an end on 2 June.
