Newcastle are still waiting to see how potential double signing will impact transfer budget - Journalist

Surely few would doubt the idea that Newcastle United’s backline needs work.

Indeed, there has been a remarkable drop-off in Newcastle’s defending this season, to the point where manager Eddie Howe claimed the team should hang their heads in shame after Wednesday’s defeat at Manchester United.

Injuries to key defenders and Nick Pope have not helped matters of course but the drop in standards has been alarming.

No team in the Premier League conceded fewer than Newcastle’s 33 goals last season. This time around, they’ve let in 60.

So then, it makes sense as to why the club are reportedly looking to freshen things up at the back.

Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly of Fulham and Bournemouth respectively are said to be keen to sign after talks with Newcastle as their contracts get set to wind down.

Then, there’s the goalkeeping department.

Aaron Ramsdale has recently been linked with a move up to St James’ Park but it seems there remains some doubt.

Newcastle are still waiting to see how much potential double signing impacts their transfer budget

According to journalist Joel Bland on X (formerly Twitter), Newcastle staff are still waiting to see how much money will be available when it comes to trying to strengthen between the sticks.

In fact, they are reportedly waiting to see how much deals for Adarabioyo and Kelly would impact their budget.

While they would obviously be free transfers, the agent fees and wages involved would obviously require some cost.

Newcastle have their priorities right this summer

It would be nice to strengthen the goalkeeping position, particularly with an England international in the form of Ramsdale.

However, given the injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles as well as the general dip in defensive standards, bolstering options there is a far more pressing need.

Get those deals over the line and then see where we’re at when it comes to the goalkeeper.
