‘Sensational’: Chris Sutton says Arsenal man should’ve won PL Player of the Season over Phil Foden

Chris Sutton feels one Arsenal player should’ve picked up the Premier League Player of the Season over Manchester City’s Phil Foden.

Arsenal and Manchester City are set to battle it out for the title on the final day of the season.

Mikel Arteta’s men will need maximum points at home to Everton while hoping City slip up at the Etihad Stadium against West Ham United.

Regardless of the outcome today, there has been undeniable progress for Arsenal as they bid to pull off a surprise title win.

One man who has made a huge difference to Arteta’s side is Declan Rice, who arrived at the Emirates Stadium for a fee worth £105 million last summer.

Paul Merson recently claimed that Rice hasn’t had a bad game all season and it’s fair to say the Englishman has slotted in seamlessly at Arsenal.

Now, Chris Sutton has claimed the 25-year-old should’ve picked up the Player of the Season award over Phil Foden, but Robbie Savage disagreed.

Sutton names Declan Rice as his Player of the Season

Foden picked up the award on Saturday after a stunning campaign with City. The England star has netted 17 times and provided eight assists heading into the final day of the campaign.

But Sutton has named Rice as his Player of the Season over the Arsenal star’s England teammate.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live [7:15pm 19/05], Savage said: “Phil Foden has won it. Do you agree with that award?”

“No. I would have gone with Declan Rice,” Sutton responded. “Declan Rice has had a good season. Two players who play for different teams both can have a good season.”

“Phil Foden has been sensational,” Savage responded.

Sutton added: “Declan Rice has been sensational.”

When asked if he feels Foden shouldn’t have won the award, Sutton doubled down on his view that Rice was the worthy winner.

“This is your only tact, isn’t it? I am saying, in my opinion, who should have won Player of the Season? Declan Rice should have won Player of the Season,” he said.

Rice’s stats for Arsenal this season

Rice arrived at Arsenal after a brilliant few years at West Ham where he mainly operated as a deeper-lying midfielder.

He’s thrived in a more advanced role for the Gunners this term and has even emerged as a capable set-piece taker.

His performances have certainly surprised a few due to his ability to impact games in the final third. The Englishman has bagged seven goals and provided nine assists in 37 league appearances this term.
