'On the radar': Alan Nixon says Sunderland could target 'fabulous' manager if they don't land first choice

Sunderland now have one recently sacked coach ‘on the radar’ in case they miss out on their first choice targets.

It is three months ago today that Sunderland sacked Michael Beale, leaving them without a permanent head coach ever since.

Mike Dodds was appointed as interim until the end of the season, but nobody could predict quite how badly his stint would go.

While supporters were hopeful that the club would bring in a replacement at the end of the season, they are yet to appoint a new manager two weeks on from their final day defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

They have continued to be heavily linked with a move for Will Still, with the 31-year-old leaving Reims after their final fixture against Rennes this evening.

The Black Cats have also been linked with Bo Svensson and Rene Maric too, so it does look increasingly likely that they will appoint from abroad.

Liam Rosenior is ‘on the radar’

However, journalist Alan Nixon has reported that they could still look a lot closer to home ‘if they fail to land one of the foreign targets’.

Speaking on his Patreon, Nixon said: “Liam Rosenior is on the radar for Birmingham City and Sunderland – after turning down an approach from Plymouth Argyle.

“Rosenior has only just left Hull City but Argyle asked him for talks. However rival clubs are interested and may be more appealing.

“Sunderland could come in hard for Rosenior if they fail to land one of the foreign targets for the Black Cats post.

“Blues are waiting on word on Tony Mowbray’s recovery from illness but would move for Rosenior if that return was not possible.”

Why is he so underrated?

Hull City fans were very shocked when it was confirmed that Liam Rosenior was leaving, and despite missing out on play-offs, they clearly had faith in the ‘fabulous‘ 39-year-old for next term.

Given his age and his potential with The Tigers, it makes it particularly surprising that he has so far attracted interest from Birmingham and Plymouth – one of whom will be playing League One football.

It would surely leave Sunderland as the most tempting offer for Rosenior, with the Black Cats hopefully aiming for a spot in the play-offs next time out.

Rosenior probably would have been much higher on Sunderland’s shortlist if they hadn’t been searching for a new manager for three months.

He would definitely be a very promising alternative if the club can’t bring in the first choice options, but someone like Will Still still seems like the best choice.
