'No brainer': Martyn Waghorn pens 'incredible' message to Derby County fans after exit confirmed

Martyn Waghorn has shared an ‘incredible’ message to Derby County fans after he was released for the second time.

Martyn Waghorn has enjoyed great memories during his two spells with Derby County, having originally joined in 2018.

The striker netted 26 goals in the Championship with the Rams, with his final day penalty saving them from relegation in the 2020/21 season.

He was then released and went onto join Coventry City, before returning to Pride Park last summer.

Waghorn’s game-time was more limited this time round, but he didn’t manage to score seven goals to help send the Rams back to the second tier.

Their promotion has resulted in his exit though, with the 34-year-old joining Dwight Gayle, Conor Hourihane, Scott Loach, Korey Smith and Joe Wildsmith in leaving the club.

Waghorn has now taken to social media to address the supporters.

Martyn Waghorn says support has been ‘incredible’

He wrote: “From the moment I left, I knew I wanted to come back. When the opportunity came around it was a no brainer.

“The only goal was to get the club back to the championship. I’m delighted the club is in a better place and moving in the right direction, personally I wish I could have gave more but promotion was the main thing.

“Thank you to the fans. Your support towards me and my family has always been incredible I wish all the lads nothing but success for the future. What a group. I loved every minute of it @dcfcofficial thank you.”

Waghorn and Gayle will both leave the club this summer, while James Collins is in talks over a new deal. While injured for most of the season anyway, Tyreece John-Jules’ exit will also leave them extremely light in the attacking department.

Where Derby County need to focus in the transfer market

Bringing in a new striker with Championship experience should be Derby’s main priority, as they certainly can’t rely on Collins to replicate his League One form as he approaches his 34th birthday.

The Rams have already been linked with Charlton Athletic’s Alfie May, though that could prove to be a risk given that he’s never played in the Championship.

Paul Warne‘s side need to be much more sensible in planning for the transfer window now that they have been promoted, because it certainly won’t be difficult for them to come straight back down.
