'Brilliant' ace & rarely-seen veteran: 3 goalkeepers that Derby County could sign to replace Wildsmith - opinion

Derby County made the shock decision to release Joe Wildsmith this week.

Joe Wildsmith picked up the League One Golden Glove award this season, after claiming a whopping 20 clean sheets in 40 matches.

The goalkeeper is out of contract this summer and was expected to extend his stay after making such an impressive contribution to their promotion.

However, the 28-year-old was one of six first-team players confirmed to be released whenDerby County shared their retained list yesterday.

Fans were left baffled by the decision, while the club will now have to bring in a suitable replacement that is even better than Wildsmith.

Here are three potential options that Derby could look at…

Three replacements for Joe Wildsmith

Lukas Jensen

Lukas Jensen has had a spectacular first season at Lincoln, having been released by Burnley.

The shot-stopper memorably saved two penalties in a Carabao Cup shootout against Sheffield United, before he was named the club’s Player of the Season after picking up 19 clean sheets.

Jensen’s impressive campaign is likely to have caught the eye and could be a solid signing for Derby, with the final 12 months of his contract approaching.

Daniel Iversen

Daniel Iversen has enjoyed some ‘brilliant’ loan spells in his career, most notably being named Preston North End’s Player of the Year for his second stint at Deepdale.

The Lilywhites wanted to re-sign the Dane but he remained at Leicester, however his game-time was still limited.

Iversen then helped Stoke City avoid relegation this season and has recently admitted that heexpects to leave the King Power Stadium this summer.

If the 26-year-old can rediscover his form with Preston, then he could be a quality signing.

Alex McCarthy

While obviously on the older side, Alex McCarthy is a goalkeeper with bags of experience.

The 34-year-old has racked up 147 appearances in the Premier League, while he also has 23 clean sheets in 78 matches in the Championship.

He has been an understudy to Gavin Bazunu at Southampton this term, but has been brought into the team in the latter stages due to injury and has picked up three clean sheets in seven games.

McCarthy is available on a free transfer this summer and could be worth a punt.
