What Nick Pope just did to the Brentford fans after they tried to mock him during Newcastle's 4-2 win

Newcastle United welcomed Nick Pope back to their starting XI as they ended the 2023/24 Premier League season with a win.

The Magpies beat Brentford 4-2 to finish the campaign in seventh place, which could be enough to qualify for the Europa Conference League if Manchester City win the FA Cup next weekend. It also means that Newcastle United have finished above Manchester United for the first time since 1977.

Eddie Howe made four changes to the Newcastle XI that started the defeat to Man United, with Pope, Fabian Schar, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes coming in for Martin Dubravka, Kieran Trippier, Elliot Anderson and Anthony Gordon.

All of the changes had an impact on proceedings, and it was particularly great to see Pope back in goal. Fans have been desperate to have him back, and his return resulted in the Magpies ending the season with a vital win.

Nick Pope was furious at the end of his Newcastle return

While he was unable to keep a clean sheet on his return, Pope did make some impressive saves. His best came in the second half as he reacted quickly to keep out an Ivan Toney header.

But the 32-year-old was also involved in a flashpoints towards the end of the game, as he was wiped out by Neal Maupay. Pope had cleared the ball away, only for Maupay to charge towards him and take him out with a sliding tackle.

It resulted in the Brentford forward getting a yellow card, as the Newcastle players reacted furiously. Pope had to be held back by Toney, with the Toon stopper extremely angry with the challenge.

What Pope did after the Brentford fans tried to mock him

Once everyone calmed down and the game was about to resume, the Brentford fans aimed a song towards Pope.

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, they chanted ‘England’s number four’ at the £10million man, while the club’s official Twitter account tweeted that they were singing ‘you’ll never play for England’, despite Pope having 10 caps for his country.

In response to the chants, Pope reminded the home fans what the score was, holding up four fingers on one hand and two on the other.

And that was how it ended, as Newcastle beat Brentford 4-2 to make it five consecutive wins over the Bees.

This was arguably the most important, as any other result would have seen us drop down to eighth and definitely miss out on Europe.

Fortunately, Pope and co were able to get the job done, and will be needing their passports once again next season as long as Man City win the FA Cup next Saturday.
