Tottenham Europa League 2024/25: Draw date, new format rules, final venue and more

Tottenham Hotspur have now confirmed their spot in next season’s Europa League following their victory over Sheffield United.

Ange Postecoglou‘s first season in charge of Tottenham has seen improvement brought to north London after a dismal 2022/23 campaign.

It’s not been a straightforward campaign by any means with injuries seriously hindering Tottenham’s second half of the campaign.

Players like Micky van de Ven and James Maddison have both suffered serious injuries which kept them out of action for a significant number of games.

Who knows what could have been for Spurs this season if they could have maintained some consistency over the last month but they have fallen just short of the top four.

With Spurs finishing fifth, it means they will make a return to European competition in the Europa League. So with that said, here’s a look at all the key information you need to know about the competition

What is the new about the Europa League format?

UEFA have revamped their club competitions for the start of the 2024/25 campaign and Tottenham will now take part in a new format of the group stages.

Spurs will now play in a 36-team League stage which will see Postecoglou’s men play four games at home and four games away to earn themselves a spot in the knockout stages.

The top eight sides will proceed to the round of 16; whilst the teams from ninth to 24 will compete in a play-off style format to earn a spot in the knockout stages.

No Champions League sides will drop out of the elite competition into the Europa League.

Europa League away goals rule

The away goals rule is something which Tottenham fans will be all too familiar with having seen two historic nights in the Champions League come as a result of winning on away goals.

However, the rule was scrapped by UEFA in the 2021/22 campaign and they have not reversed their decision.

Regardless, it is a rule that came into force in the knockout stages of the competition which are eight games away from Spurs when the campaign starts.

What pot will Tottenham be drawn from in 2024/25 Europa League?

The pots have not yet been decided for the 2024/25 Europa League campaign. However, there is the expectation Spurs will be among the pot one clubs.

Chelsea leapfrogging Newcastle United in recent weeks has seen Tottenham pushed down slightly in the projection of pot one.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will land in the Europa League as one of the highest-ranked sides if Manchester City beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
