Michael Stewart's verdict on the Celtic financial reality and potential summer budget

Celtic should have considerable ammunition heading into the summer transfer window under Brendan Rodgers.

Financially, the Scottish Premiership champions will benefit significantly after securing entry into the new Champions League format, with a guarantee of four home matches and four away fixtures.

Rodgers has plenty to consider regarding where he could strengthen his side; meanwhile, offloading fringe men will likely free up wage expenditure to reinvest in potential new arrivals.

The Bhoys already sit on a secure financial footing; however, there has been a desire from fans to see a shift in tact regarding the typical level of transfer fee Celtic are willing to pay to secure talent on the market.

Either way, exciting times lay in store for a support who aren’t showing any signs of letting their insatiable hunger for success on all fronts fade, and pundit Michael Stewart has now had his own say on prospective recruitment dealings at Parkhead.

Michael Stewart’s verdict on Celtic’s summer transfer activity

Speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast, Stewart believes Celtic have a ‘ludicrous’ amount of money in their name that has to go towards helping Rodgers strengthen his squad.

Citing the net spend of the club, the pundit also indicated this is only likely to grow substantially as the months go by at Parkhead.

He explained, firstly, when discussing Celtic backing Rodgers in the window: “They’ve got to (back Rodgers in the market)

“It’s rough numbers but they still spent over £20 million in the summer. £20 million, and I’m sure most people would say, where’s the impact on the team because there hasn’t been much, but, even with that £20 million, and that’s over the course of the season and not just the summer because they’ve brought in Kuhn for just under £3 million in January.

“Over the course of this season they’ve spent just over £20 million, but that is only half in terms of what they actually brought in on player sales. Their net spend is minus £20 + million, that’s before you take into account the money they’ll have made because they run at a profit anyway.

“They have got shedloads of cash to go with the £70 million + sitting in the bank, now I know transfer fees. The point is this is a club that has a ludicrous amount of money available to spend, and we all know the Champions League this season is awash with cash.”

Celtic should have an exciting summer to look forward to

Once the Scottish Cup final is over next weekend, Celtic will break off for the summer and should be set for an exciting summer, though as fans, nobody will speak too soon.

Granted, there may also be one or two surprising player sales; however, the model at Parkhead is to develop talent and sell on for a large profit, which is unlikely to change any time soon.

Either way, if Rodgers is given what he desires, there could be some very intriguing incomings in store ahead of 2024/25.
