Jonson Clarke-Harris has heaped praise on Sheffield Wednesday following his arrival at local rivals Rotherham United.
The striker re-signed for The Millers on a free transfer last week, having spent the last four years with Peterborough United.
Clarke-Harris netted 87 goals in 189 games for Posh and has finished three his four seasons as their top scorer.
His 29 goals in the 2022/23 season didn’t prove enough to get Peterborough promoted though, with Clarke-Harris on the end of Wednesday’s dramatic comeback in the play-offs.
The 29-year-old netted the fourth goal as Posh battered the Owls 4-0 in the play-off first leg, but was forced to become a bystander as Wednesday fought back with a huge 5-1 victory days later.
Clarke-Harris has now hailed Wednesday one year on, claiming the atmosphere at Hillsborough was the ‘best’ he’s ever seen.
Sheffield Wednesday are absolutely ‘relentless’
Speaking to Peterborough’s official website, the attacker said: “We delivered an amazing performance to beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 in the play-off semi-final first leg.
“But in hindsight I wished we’d won 1-0 or 2-0 as they had nothing to lose at Hillsborough and just threw the kitchen sink at us. If you look back at their season they didn’t play anything like they played against us that night in any other game. They did the opposite of how they usually played, and a full Hillsborough didn’t help, nor did conceding an early penalty.
“It was easily the best atmosphere I’ve ever played in and it was relentless for 120 minutes, apart from for about 60 seconds after we scored. It quietened down for a bit then, but then it started up again.
“I should have boomed the ball out of Hillsborough, but it was so hard to focus in those frantic moments and I just concentrated on getting the ball away from our goal. It fell to the wrong player though as Barry Bannan with all his quality picked it up and they had Aden Flint, a tower of a man, in our penalty area.”
The Owls’ home form says it all
Jonson Clarke-Harris isn’t the first person to praise Sheffield Wednesday’s atmosphere and he certainly won’t be the last.
The Hillsborough support has been vital to the Owls’ success on so many occasions, and whileDanny Rohl can take huge credit for their recent survival, a lot of it also goes down to the fans.
Rohl’s side only lost one of their final nine games on home soil, while they only lost four in total under the German coach.
Wednesday could well have gone down if it wasn’t for their support and there is no doubt they will play a key role whatever happens next season too.
