Bannan 5th & 'destroyer' 1st: Sheffield Wednesday's top five highest-rated players in 2023/24

Sheffield Wednesday’s entire squad came under high praise following their dramatic end to the campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday looked highly likely to drop straight back down to League One earlier this season.

However, Danny Rohl‘s arrival completely transformed the club and saw them finish three points clear of the relegation zone.

Despite a disastrous first few months of the campaign, a number of Wednesday’s first-team players received plenty of plaudits for their quick turnaround.

Pol Valentin was one player who went from an underwhelming signing to a‘fans’ favourite’, while Di’Shon Bernard proved himself to be an absolute bargain free transfer.

While fans will have their favourites, there were five senior players who received the highest overall ratings during the 2023/24 season.

Here are Sheffield Wednesday’s top five rated players, according to WhoScored

Sheffield Wednesday’s highest rated players of 2023/24

5. Barry Bannan – 6.67

The Owls captain made 41 starts in the Championship and continued his‘sensational’ form, despite approaching the end of his contract.

Bannan is highly likely to extend his stay at Hillsborough and can hopefully play a key contribution next term too.

4. Josh Windass – 6.7

Despite managing only 25 appearances due to injury, Josh Windass’ strong end to the campaign ensured he had one of the highest ratings.

The ‘big game player’ scored six goals this season – three of which came in the final three matches, to help secure their survival.

Windass is already in talks with the Owls over a new contract, though his hefty wages and injury recordcould have an impact.

3. Marvin Johnson – 6.81

Marvin Johnson didn’t make an appearance for Wednesday until Danny Rohl’s fourth game in charge this season, but went onto become an important figure under the German.

The 33-year-old’s form resulted in a £1 million bid from Ipswich, but he remained with the Yorkshire outfit.

Having picked up eight goal contributions this season, it is still unclear whether he will be signing a new contract. In fact, journalist Dom Howson has urged the club to release him.

2. Ike Ugbo – 6.86

Ike Ugbo only joined the club in January, but quickly established himself as key member of their relegation battle.

The striker netted seven goals in the Championship and is thought to be a permanent target for Wednesday this summer. Ugbo’s impressive loan spell is likely to attract attention elsewhere though, meaning the Owls may have to consider other options in case they miss out.

1. Will Vaulks – 6.87

Will Vaulks was statistically Sheffield Wednesday’s best player this season, despite only making 25 starts.

The ‘destroyer‘ was even linked with a move away in January, but proved to be a vital cog in Rohl’s team for the latter stages and went onto pick up a brace of assists in the dramatic 2-2 draw with Norwich City last month.

Vaulks is also out of contract this summer and Wednesday would be daft to let him go.
