I saw ‘clumsy’ Arsenal star show exactly why Arteta has to sell him this summer v Everton

Mikel Arteta will have some difficult decisions to make this summer as he seeks to take Arsenal to next level again.

The mood will be low at Arsenal today.

Despite all the Gunners’ good work this season, they were beaten to the Premier League title by Manchester City on Sunday.

Although Mikel Arteta’s side were able to claim a 2-1 victory against Everton at the Emirates Stadium, Manchester City’s triumph over West Ham United meant that they lifted the Premier League trophy for the fourth time in as many seasons.

Arsenal weren’t at their best against the Toffees, and had to be patient for their win. Kai Havertz was able to stab the ball over the line from close range in the 89th minute to secure the three points.

Throughout the game itself, though, nerves and apprehension clearly played a part. The Arsenal fans were in full voice inside the Emirates Stadium, but Arteta’s team lacked a clinical edge against Sean Dyche’s well-organised side for much of the match.

Whilst the hosts dominated possession and territory, their play wasn’t always smooth. When Arsenal looked to be awkward in their play, Thomas Partey was often at the heart of the issue.

Thomas Partey was Arsenal weak link against Everton

The Ghanaian midfielder has endured another injury-hit campaign, but has come back into the regular starting XI in recent weeks. However, after Partey produced a poor performance against Manchester United, he needed to impress against Everton.

Instead, the 30-year-old was described as being “clumsy” by The Standard, as his defensive efforts were unconvincing and his play on the ball left plenty to be desired.

Partey was also responsible for giving away the free kick which led to the visitors’ opening goal.

According to Sofascore statistics, Partey only won one of the six duels he contested against Everton, lost possession of the ball on six occasions, was dribbled past once, and committed three fouls and picked up a booking.

Partey was hauled off in the 69th minute, with Emile Smith Rowe taking to the field in his stead.

What Mikel Arteta must now do with Thomas Partey

Arteta must now make a firm decision to move on from Partey this summer, if a buyer for the former Atletico Madrid star can be found.

His recurrent injury issues mean that he cannot be relied upon to be fit and available when called upon, and recent outings have shown that he is no longer the player he once was. He no longer looks able to cope with the pace and intensity of the Premier League.

Partey is keen to remain at Arsenal and strut his stuff in the Champions League, but his time at the very top of the game now looks to have passed.
