Top 10 Manchester United kits of all time, Ranked

Manchester United are set to release their new home kit for the 2024/25 season in the coming weeks, setting up the look they will rock during the campaign.

The Red Devils have walked out in some iconic strips over the years, with the players often cementing the feeling towards a certain design.

Man United have worn their famous red in title-winning campaigns, cup triumphs and continental success, with one special season presenting all three.

Adidas, the current manufacturer of the United kits, have some stiff competition to beat if they want the next set of shirts to feature amongst the top Man United and Premier League football kits of all time.

So with that said, TBR Football takes a look at the top ten Manchester United kits of all time, ranked.

Adidas have produced some iconic Manchester United kits over the years and the away kit for 1990-1992 is another that fits this category.

Red, white and blue are the main themes of this shirt, with a unique all-over pattern that makes it stand out from any other regular design – which was later used in an all-black version of the 2017/18 away kit.

United managed to lift the League Cup in the kit, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

9 – Manchester United 1992-1994 third kit

Kit manufacturers Umbro took over from Adidas in 1992 and produced an instant classic with their gold and green design.

The shirt was a call back to the old colours worn when Manchester United were previously known as Newton Heath – which has since been a symbol of better days for fans of the club.

As was typical of kit designs in the 90s, it was a baggy fit with a shoelace design for the collar that gives it that retro feel.

The club won the first two Premier League seasons in the kit, as well as an FA Cup and a Community Shield.

Umbro delivered with their initial designs in the 90s, adding an iconic home kit to their portfolio in 1992.

The Red Devils played in their usual red and white colours, but the bold collar design makes it instantly recognisable.

There are line details on the shirt that can be seen in closer focus, adding to the charm of the design.

With two Premier League titles won in the kit, it was a great way for the club to start their era of dominance in the newly established top flight.

Nike have produced some outstanding kits for Manchester United and the 2009-2010 home kit is certainly in that category.

The usual red kit colour is complemented by the black accents on the collar and across the chest, which houses the club crest.

It is instantly recognisable, however, the shirt didn’t get the love it perhaps deserved on the trophy front as only a League Cup was achieved while wearing it.

Yet another one of Umbro’s classic designs from the 90s makes it onto the top ten list, with the away kit from 1993-1995 joining the rankings.

A black-and-gold combination can rarely go wrong, with Manchester United showing off their class with such a design.

The stitched-on badge was housed in another crest, adding more visual detail to the shirt, while the collar and shirt cuffs have grey accents instead of the matching gold theme.

Nike’s 2004-2006 home kit pushed Manchester United shirt designs from retro to a more modern look and feel.

Red was the predominant colour for the kit, however white accents around the shoulders added some visual pop, while the colour was more muted in design.

The Manchester United crest was moved to the centre, adding a more streamlined look to the whole arrangement.

It’s a kit that will often be associated with the rise of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney to the big stage.

Adidas returned to making Manchester United kits in 2015 and is set to stay until 2035.

Since planning the designs once again, the German manufacturer released a stunning home kit for the 2019/20 season.

The sleek red colours helped the deep black accents on the shoulders and collar pop, while a black and gold crest sealed the deal for a classic design.

It was a clean kit design that few saw, due to matches being played behind closed doors.

3 – Manchester United 1994-1996 home kit

Making the top three for all-time Manchester United kits is the home shirt for 1994-1996, which many will instantly recognise.

The baggy fit is iconic for the time, while the large collar also plays a huge part in making the design stand out.

While many players used to prefer their collars to be folded down, Eric Cantona decided against that, with the large folded-out look becoming iconic over that period.

The white and red accents on the stitched crest also play a part in making the kit one of the most iconic of all time.

Nike produced one of the kits that has become synonymous with modern-day success for Manchester United when launching their home shirt for 2007-2009.

The kit is a clean design, simply including the crest and sponsorship logos, with a standard crew neck collar.

It’s an elegant look that was worn when United completed the Premier League and Champions League double in 2007/08, while the next year they also completed their only Premier League and League Cup double.

Leaving the best for last, Umbro designed yet another classic in 1998, with a shirt that is etched in the history of Manchester United.

The kit blueprint was yet another baggy fit, while there was a large white collar and black cuffs on the long-sleeved edition.

Beneath the collar was a small detail of a white and black V, almost imitating a v-neck collar design around the neck.

The badged was housed in a crest once again, though this time it would have a white background to stand out.

With such an iconic kit came standout moments, none more so than the great turnaround against Bayern Munich in 1999 in the Champions League final.

It was a shirt design that saw unrivalled success, landing a first treble in the Premier League, a record that would be held for years.
