Why you shouldn’t make your bed when you wake up

Dr. Karan Raj advises against making your bed as soon as you wake up in the morning as it can cause a series of health issues without you realizing it.

Based on the scientific evidence, the doctor claims in a TikTok video the bedsheets and pillowcases would have accumulated dust mites – “predators” smaller than 1 mm that feed on human skin.

Dust mites are believed to thrive in moist environments; our hot and sweaty bodies become perfect targets for them at night.

Not only do they feed on human skin, but also leave behind excretions which can cause allergies and other health issues.

The doctor suggests leaving your bed as is after waking so the dust mites are exposed to the sun and air, which may dehydrate and kill them.

However, when you make your bed immediately, your sheets keep the moisture locked, thus allowing the approximately 1.5 million mites to grow and thrive.

Dust mites can cause health issues

Dust mites are believed to cause skin diseases like eczema, and skin rashes in addition to worsening asthma symptoms and breathing-related issues.

Dust mite allergy is caused in reaction to the tiny bugs, common in most homes and the symptoms are similar to cold or flu.

You may suffer from runny nose, sneezing, and difficulties in breathing. The skin-related issues can cause rashes and swelling in affected areas.

According to the Mayo Clinic, dust mites are among the common contributors to asthma, and you are advised to see a doctor upon experiencing symptoms like chest tightness or pain, an audible sound while exhaling, and bouts of wheezing.
