'We expect': Craig Hope shares update on Anthony Gordon's England hopes after missing Australia trip

Newcastle United player Anthony Gordon is waiting to find out whether he will be going to the Euros with England.

The 23-year-old is in contention for a place on the plane after enjoying a sensational season, with Anthony Gordon widely considered to be Newcastle United‘s player of the year.

He has been absolutely brilliant, and his efforts won him two England caps back in March. He did very well during his first senior Three Lions camp, and it should result in him going to the European Championship.

However, a minor setback has come his way at the worst possible time.

Anthony Gordon suffers ankle injury

Gordon suffered an ankle injury during Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United last week. He sustained the problem after a challenge from Sofyan Amrabat which incredibly did not result in a penalty being awarded.

But it did result in Gordon missing Newcastle’s final game of the season. He was not part of the Toon squad that beat Brentford 4-2, with Gordon missing a game due to injury for the first time during a gruelling campaign.

The former Everton man has subsequently not flown to Australia with the rest of the squad, as they prepare to take on Tottenham Hotspur and the A-League All stars in two post-season friendlies.

Whether Anthony Gordon will be available for England selection

Gordon’s ankle injury has cast doubt over his immediate international future, with Gareth Southgate set to announce his squad for the Euros on Tuesday.

However, the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has provided a positive update on Gordon’s fitness on his YouTube channel with regards to being in the England squad.

“He should be fine,” he said.

“He’s had a scan on that injured ankle. He’s not going to Australia – probably good news for Gordon and for England.

“We expect him to be okay for that England squad on Tuesday.”

Gordon missing Newcastle trip could be a good thing

Hope does not believe the ankle injury is going to hinder Gordon’s chances of going to the Euros. That is excellent news, as he absolutely has to be included in the squad.

Missing the trip to Australia might actually be a good thing for the attacker, as he can now rest rather than travel thousands of miles away for a couple of pointless friendlies that are only taking place for commercial reasons.

It is not an ideal end to the season for Newcastle, as Kieran Trippier has pointed out, but Gordon might have got lucky. He might even be a bit grateful for this injury, as long as it does not hurt his chances of being on that plane to Germany next month.

Injury is not going to rule him out of the Euros, and now Gordon must wait to see if Southgate wants him in the squad.
