Ian Wright sends clear message to Daniel Levy as Tottenham Hotspur’s season ends

Tottenham Hotspur head into the summer transfer window having secured Europa League football for next season.

Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge of Tottenham has seen the club return to European action.

Tottenham completely missed out on Europe last time around, not even sneaking into the Europa Conference League.

Often viewed as the ‘wooden spoon’ of European football, that may not have been the worst thing in the world in the eyes of many fans.

Spurs weren’t able to secure a top-four finish as a tough fixture list and poor performances combined to leave Tottenham on the outside looking in.

Still, Sunday’s 3-0 win at Sheffield United has seen Tottenham secure a spot in the Europa League and that has to be considered as a step forward after last season.

Postecoglou will now be looking to shape the Tottenham squad to his liking as he enters his third transfer window as Spurs boss.

The Australian wants to see Tottenham make real steps forward on the pitch and that means improving the Tottenham squad.

Tottenham may not be able to spend quite as much as if Champions League qualification had been secured, but Postecoglou certainly needs backing.

Pundit Ian Wright has now offered his view whilst speaking on his final Match of the Day appearance.

Wright believes that Postecoglou simply isn’t going to be truly happy until he sees Tottenham reaching the ‘lofty ambitions’ he has in mind.

Wright added a message for Daniel Levy, urging the Spurs chairman to back Postecoglou in the transfer market.

The former Arsenal striker believes that Postecoglou is a real ‘winner’, but the last few weeks at Tottenham will have ‘opened his eyes’.

“I think him saying he has got lofty ambitions for the club and until he reaches that point, he is not going to smile too much, they have got a manager who wants to win,” said Wright. “You are hoping now that Daniel Levy will back him because the last couple of weeks probably has really opened his eyes. This manager needs backing now. He is a winner,” he added.

What do Tottenham need this summer?

Reports suggest that Tottenham are now ready to axe up to 15 players this summer in order to really kickstart the Postecoglou revolution.

Some of that 15 are loanees who are away from Spurs, such as Joe Rodon, Djed Spence, Tanguy Ndombele and Sergio Reguilon.

The likes of Fraser Forster, Giovani Lo Celso, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Ryan Sessegnon, Ben Davies, Emerson Royal, Bryan Gil and Manor Solomon could move on.

Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp could also move on if offers come in with Tottenham seemingly ready to overhaul Postecoglou’s options.

Tottenham may therefore need another goalkeeper to replace Forster as well as new full backs on both sides of the back line.

Maybe a centre back with versatility to play at full back or in midfield would be useful, whilst a true holding midfield player would be ideal.

Tottenham certainly need to add a real centre forward and a wide player will be needed; that could be Timo Werner, but Spurs will be weighing up a permanent move for the German.

There is plenty of work for Tottenham to do this summer and with so many players potentially up for grabs, it may be a busy summer of wheeling and dealing for Postecoglou and Johan Lange.
