A 71-year-old Maryland man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the brutal murder of his 48-year-old stepson, Sharod Moore, in 2023.

According to investigators, on February 22, 2023, just after 2:30 pm, the Anne Arundel County police received a call reporting a shooting inside a home on the unit block of Park Place.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered Sharod Moore, George Albert Summers' stepson, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Rushed to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Moore tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

Waiting outside the home, Summers was apprehended by the police without incident.

During questioning, the 71-year-old admitted to the shooting, revealing that it was the result of an ongoing parking dispute between the two men.

Summers' wife, the victim's mother, provided a harrowing account of the events leading up to the tragedy.

She told the officers that her husband had repeatedly asked Sharod Moore to move his vehicle from Summers' usual parking spot throughout the day, but Moore was unable to locate the car keys.

Enraged by the situation, Summers threatened to break down Moore's bedroom door and kill him. Moments later, a gunshot rang out from Moore's room.

In the aftermath of the incident, Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess condemned the senseless nature of the crime. "This is sadly another case where a verbal dispute turned deadly because of easy access to a firearm, the opposite of what was needed in this heated situation," she stated. Leitess emphasized that there was "no excuse for a man to lose his life over something as trivial as a parking space, especially at the hands of his own stepfather."

On March 14, 2024, Summers entered a guilty plea to charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.

The Honorable Kathleen Vitale subsequently sentenced Summers to 40 years in prison, with the first five years to be served without the possibility of parole.

"This sentence ensures the Defendant will remain behind bars for the expected remainder of his life," Leitess said.
