Developer’s bid for more homes on top of Cambridge housing block

A developer is looking to build even more flats in the new floor it plans to add on top of an existing block of flats in Cambridge.

Permission was granted on appeal to build three new flats on top of Edeva Court in Wulfstan Way despite concerns from people already living in the building.

Now the developer, Avon Ground Rents Ltd, wants to increase the number of flats it can build on top of the block to four. It is proposing to build three one-bedroom flats, and one two-bedroom flat.

In plans submitted to Cambridge City Council, it said: “Each flat is designed to comply with the nationally described space standards and will be provided with generous kitchen/living/dining areas, built-in storage space, dual aspect windows and private outdoor amenity space in the form of balconies.

“The flats will be accessed via the existing central stair core.”

The council initially refused permission for the original plans to build a new floor on top of the three-storey block, which already includes 12 flats.

Concerns had been raised by those living in the building that the extension to add three new flats on top of their homes would have a “permanent and irreversible adverse impact on the character and appearance” of the suburban area.

However, the council’s decision was overturned after the developer appealed to the planning inspectorate.

The planning inspector said the proposals would be a “sensitive, upwards extension” of the building, which would add three new homes to the supply of housing within the city.

The council will now be asked to consider the latest proposals put forward by the developer to build four new flats rather than three on the additional floor.
