Yannick Bolasie sends message to Jean-Philippe Mateta after he makes Crystal Palace history

Yannick Bolasie has sent a message to Jean-Philippe Mateta after the Frenchman made Crystal Palace history on Sunday.

The Crystal Palace No.14 rounded off his stunning 2023/24 campaign in some style during the 5-0 win over Aston Villa, netting a hat-trick to end the season on 19 goals and five assists in all competitions.

In doing so, the man from Sevran became the first Crystal Palace player to score a Premier League hat-trick at Selhurst Park.

After Jean-Philippe Mateta made Crystal Palace history, Yannick Bolasie sent him a message…

What Yannick Bolasie said to Jean-Philippe Mateta

Bolasie actually became the first Crystal Palace player to score a Premier League hat-trick, regardless of venue, back in April 2015.

The DR Congo international scored three goals in just 11 minutes to help Alan Pardew secure a 4-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

After seeing Mateta join him in this exclusive club at Crystal Palace, Bolasie wrote: “Welcome to the Premier league hat-trick club JP Mateta 👏🏿 @CPFC ❤️💙 it’s been 10 years since mine, another Congolese added to the list ✅”

As aforesaid, the 26-year-old is French.

However, Bolasie refers to Mateta as a fellow Congolese as the Crystal Palace striker’s father is Congolese, and actually played professional football in Congo, as well as in Belgium.

Crystal Palace history maker in more ways than one

Not only did Mateta score the first Crystal Palace hat-trick at Selhurst Park, but he also made a further piece of history.

In scoring 16 Premier League goals in a single 38-game campaign, the £9m striker beat Christian Benteke’s tally of 15 Premier League goals, set back in the 2016/17 season, to set the record for our highest individual goalscoring campaign in the Premier League era.

Mateta also ended the season with goals in nine consecutive Premier League games at Selhurst Park – setting the record for best goalscoring streak from a Crystal Palace player on home soil.

Hopefully, the popular frontman can keep this up going into the 2024/25 campaign – he has been a joy to behold ever since Oliver Glasner replaced Roy Hodgson.
