'More critics than ever': BBC pundit shares Danny Rohl verdict and outlines the 'pressure' on Sheffield Wednesday

BBC reporter Rob Staton has given his verdict on Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, and the pressure on owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Sheffield Wednesday like so many teams in the Championship face another crucial summer transfer window, following their 20th place finish in 2023/24.

But for the Owls, the summer ahead may be slightly more pivotal than it is for other teams, with Wednesday having a lot of spinning plates as things stand.

The club recently announced their retained list and are waiting on decisions from the likes of Di’Shon Bernard, Josh Windass, and Barry Bannan.

The Owls are also trying to finalise the future of Rohl; he and Chansiri have been in talks, with further talks apparently scheduled after Rohl returned to the UK recently.

There’s certainly a lot of worry among fans over whether or not Rohl stays. And there’s certainly a lot of pressure on Chansiri to tempt Rohl into committing his long-term future to the club.

Rob Staton verdict on Danny Rohl and Dejphon Chansiri at Sheffield Wednesday

Discussing Rohl’s future on Football Heaven, BBC pundit Staton said: “That’s the big question.

“There is pressure on the chairman, because I think the chairman’s had plenty of critics, rightly so, over the recent history.

“If he now solidifies Wednesday’s future under this manager, he will get a lot of credit back in the bank with the Wednesday fans.

“But if he doesn’t, and Wednesday end up having a summer like last summer, then the opposite will be true, and there’ll be more critics than ever.”

Sheffield Wednesday facing make or break summer

The summer ahead looks like it could go one of two ways for Sheffield Wednesday; extremely well, or another disaster.

Last summer was a disaster with Darren Moore leaving just weeks after clinging promotion from League One, with Xisco Munoz coming in and helping to oversee an extremely messy and unorganised summer transfer window.

This summer, if Rohl suddenly leaves, it’ll land the Owls in exactly the same position they were when Moore left, and undoubtedly set them up for another disastrous season in the Championship.

But if Rohl stays, then names like Windass and Bannan surely stay, and maybe even Bernard. And if Rohl stays then the club will be much more attractive to players in the transfer market then if he were to leave.

So Rohl staying in S6 surely leads to better players arriving this summer; younger players who the club can finally start to build around, following years of arguably bringing in anyone who’s willing to join.

For Chansiri then, there’s certainly pressure on his shoulders to get Rohl to stay and to let him do his thing this summer.

And like Staton says, failing to do so would leave the Sheffield Wednesday owner more unpopular than ever.
