Brennan Johnson statistic highlights encouraging progress in first Tottenham Hotspur season

Tottenham Hotspur have ended Ange Postecoglou’s first season in fifth place, returning to European football in the process.

Spurs recovered from a testing week to produce a comfortable victory over Sheffield United on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou put all of the drama around the Arsenal rivalry discussions to end the season on a high.

Spurs ran out 3-0 winners at Bramall Lane, adding to the misery for the already-relegated Blades.

Dejan Kulusevski’s brace and a Pedro Porro goal handed Tottenham the three points and locked down fifth place.

Chelsea were making a late run to try and overtake Tottenham, but Spurs managed to hold on and secure Europa League football for next season.

Impressive Brennan Johnson statistic

Kulusevski grabbed the headlines with a brace but Sunday’s win was also a landmark moment for winger Brennan Johnson.

Tottenham splashed £47.5million on signing Johnson from Nottingham Forest last summer.

The Welshman took a little while to really get going but has popped up with some important goals this season.

Johnson wasn’t on the scoresheet against Sheffield United and even sent one close-range effort over the bar.

Johnson did pick up an assist though – his 10th of the season – by teeing up Porro to make it 2-0 in front of the travelling Spurs fans.

Five goals and 10 assists from 32 appearances isn’t a bad record at all and the assist total is certainly impressive.

In fact, Sunday’s assist means that Johnson finishes the campaign with just players ahead of him in the Premier League assist charts.

Ollie Watkins finished top of the tree with 13 assists whilst Cole Palmer came second with 11.

Johnson finds himself on 10, joining the likes of Son Heung-min, Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne and Morgan Gibbs-White.

That is a hugely impressive campaign for Johnson, who has shown promising signs in his first Tottenham season.

Johnson must still develop next season

That assist tally is impressive but Johnson must still kick on again next season.

Johnson has struggled in some games and has gone missing at times, whilst his finishing ability in front of goal can certainly be improved.

It’s easy to forget that Johnson is only 22 though and should have plenty of development ahead of him after just two seasons in the Premier League.

Johnson will also have a full pre-season under Ange Postecoglou for the first time this summer and we have seen enough this season to suggest that he can become a star.

The pace Johnson provides is a major threat and if five goals and 10 assists is his starting point in a Tottenham shirt, then Postecoglou has plenty to work with moving forward.
