‘I’m completely shocked’: Gary Lineker stunned by what Alan Shearer has said about Liverpool player

Gary Lineker has been left shocked by a claim Alan Shearer has made about one Liverpool player.

Speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Shearer, alongside Micah Richards, was tasked with naming his best current XI of Premier League players.

As you can imagine, there was some debate at right-back, with the pundits disagreeing over Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and who is better.

Shearer backed Alexander-Arnold while Richards backed Walker, much to the surprise of Lineker, who expected the pundits to go the other way with their respective opinions.

Gary Lineker shocked by Alan Shearer’s Trent Alexander-Arnold claim

The Match of the Day trio spoke about who the best right-back in the league is.

“Right-back?” Lineker asked.

“It’s between Trent and Walker,” Richards said.

“I suppose it depends on your team if you want delivery or pace from the back,” Lineker said.

“After winning the treble, Walker has to go in, he’s England’s right-back,” Richards said.

“I’m going Trent,” Shearer said.

“Can I just say something here. I would’ve bet anything on one of you having Walker and one of you having Trent, and I would’ve had it the other way around, I’m completely shocked by that,” Lineker said.

Alexander-Arnold vs Kyle Walker

It’s so hard to decide on who the best right-back in the Premier League is at the moment, because there are two world-class players with very different skillsets.

Walker is your traditional right-back who is a fantastic defender and impossible to get past, while Alexander-Arnold has re-invented the role in his own image, proving that full-backs can also be playmakers when used in the right system.

Both of these players are going to go down as Premier League greats, and who you prefer is largely down to personal preference.

Gareth Southgate certainly has a difficult decision to make on this front this summer.
