Three Tottenham youngsters who could feature against Newcastle in Australia friendly

Ange Postecoglou has a 24-man squad to pick from when his Tottenham side face Newcastle in a post-season friendly in Australia.

The Spurs boss is back on home soil as the Lilywhites continue to expand their global branding by travelling across the world.

While Tottenham’s pre-season tour will focus elsewhere, their post-season travels could see a mixed team entertain the supporters Down Under.

Some stars are missing from the squad that made the trip immediately after Spurs beat Sheffield United, while others will have one eye towards international tournaments being played over the summer.

That may open the door to some Tottenham youngsters receiving their chance to shine in front of fans.

Tottenham squad for Newcastle friendly in Australia

Tottenham have confirmed their squad for their trip to Australia, which includes several players missing out.

Cristian Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are fresh absences, while Giovani Lo Celso also misses out on the squad.

Injured players such as Richarlison, Timo Werner, Destiny Udogie, Yves Bissouma, Ben Davies, Manor Solomon, Ryan Sessegnon and Fraser Forster will all be absent.

It has made way for several youngsters to feature within a 24-man squad for Spurs.

  • Goalkeepers: Guglielmo Vicario, Brandon Austin, Alfie Whiteman.
  • Defenders: Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin, Pedro Porro, Emerson Royal, Ashley Phillips, George Abbott, Leo Black.
  • Midfielders: James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, Oliver Skipp, Alfie Devine, Tyrese Hall, Rio Kyerematen.
  • Forwards: Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson, Bryan Gil, Dane Scarlett, Jamie Donley, Yago Santiago.

So with that said, here’s a look at three Tottenham academy stars who may get a chance to impress.

Who is Ashley Phillips?

Ashley Phillips is a Tottenham defender who was signed from Blackburn Rovers in August 2023 for a fee worth roughly £2million.

The 18-year-old centre-back spent the second half of the season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, making 18 appearances as he helped The Pilgrims survive in the Championship.

With a taste for senior football, Phillips could receive some minutes against Newcastle, especially with a lack of defensive options in the squad.

Who is Leo Black?

Leo Black is another Tottenham youngster who could be in the frame for some minutes in the clash with Newcastle.

The 18-year-old has largely played at right-back for the under-18s, however, he can also play in central midfield.

Due to this ability to play in both positions, Black can invert into midfield from full-back, making him the ideal option for Ange Postecoglou’s system.

It may see the defender handed a chance to impress in the first-team squad before the summer break.

Who is Jamie Donley?

Another promising youngster is Jamie Donley, who is capable of playing as a striker or an attacking midfielder.

The 19-year-old bagged five goals and 12 assists in 17 appearances in the Premier League 2 this season, underlining his impressive progression.

Donley may get a chance to stake his claim in the team against Newcastle, following an appearance in the FA Cup earlier in the season.

Tottenham academy options

There are, of course, more options for Postecoglou to pick from than just the three listed, but it highlights the depth that Tottenham have in their youth ranks now.

The under-21s managed to top the Premier League 2 table, while some academy players have received first-team minutes.

There’s plenty of promise for the years ahead and the Spurs fans may get their first glimpse of that against Newcastle.
