Jamie Carragher responds to back-lash over what Jurgen Klopp said to him straight after leaving Liverpool

Fall-out continues to come after Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Liverpool over the weekend.

It was a big day for the Reds, as they did their best to give Jurgen the send-off his time at the club deserved.

As it turns out, the eyes of the country were on them. Viewing figures released have shown that Liverpool’s goodbye for the legendary manager trumped Man City’s title celebrations down the East Lancs Road.

As a result of so many eyeballs being on them, there was always going to be a few not too happy with things. And although the likes of Ian Wright have hailed proceedings at Anfield, opposition fans were not as enthusiastic.

Having been present for Klopp’s big farewell on Sunday, Jamie Carragher has now hit back at some who took issue with something the Reds boss said in particular.

Jamie Carragher defends Jurgen Klopp comments

Klopp has been at his best over the past few weeks. Freed by the knowledge that he won’t be here next season, the 56-year-old has said exactly what’s been on his mind.

That continued at the weekend, where Jurgen told Carragher and Sky Sports that Liverpool have been much more careful with money than some of their Premier League rivals.

“In a world where if you want to improve everybody is overspending, we didn’t!” said the German.

“We have a complete rock solid club and people tell you ‘you don’t spend enough’ and you think ‘what the heck do you want?!’

“We spend what we have. If we spend more we have the same problems like everybody else. It’s not that they throw peanuts at us, we earn good money. That’s how it is because we developed in that way.”

Predictably, rivals fans were furious with Klopp’s comments after a video of the interview was posted on X. In response to these neigh-Sayers, Carragher responding on the social media platform with a post highlighting the net spend of the league’s ‘Big Six’ since Klopp’s appointment.

How much Liverpool have spent under Jurgen Klopp

We’re not sure why people get so agitated over this point from Klopp. It’s always been the case that Liverpool have spent what they’ve earned.

The Reds have of course broken the bank a number of times under the manager. The figures paid for the likes of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were records for players in their positions at the time.

As per BBC Sport, Liverpool have spent approximately £850m since Klopp arrived in October 2015. That is still far lower than their rivals. Respectively, Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Arsenal have spent: £1.9bn, £1.3bn, £1.2bn a d £1bn in the same period.

Equating to net spend, Liverpool are of course the lowest there, too. Deducting sales, Liverpool have spent around £400m under Klopp. Chelsea, City, United and Arsenal have net spends of £1bn, £700m, £800m and £700m.

Klopp is right and Carragher is too. If rivals don’t like it, they can argue with themselves.
