Aston Villa star Moussa Diaby now wins Premier League award few will know even existed

Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby has won an end of season Premier League award that few will even know existed.

Diaby was a key part of an incredibly successful season in just his first at Aston Villa this campaign, helping the club to a Champions League spot.

Unai Emery brought the French winger to the club last July for a club record £51.9 million%20as%20Villa's%20record%20signing.) from Bayer Leverkusen and he has entertained the Villa Park faithful no end with his lighting pace and trickery, as well as his wand of a left foot.

The 24-year-old hit ten goals in all competitions, as well as nine assists, but it was one particular goal that has seen him pick up an award to end to the 2023/24 season.

The award in question is the Premier League’s Most Powerful Goal of the Season.

Diaby has secured the award for his strike against Wolves on 30th March which put Villa 1-0 up in a game they eventually won 2-0.

The strike came following a deflected cross which fell to Diaby, who then thumped the ball home past a number of Wolves defenders in the 36th-minute.

The strike was recorded at a remarkable 109.84km/h and beat Eberechi Eze’s strike for Crystal Palace on the 5-0 final day thumping of Villa by just over 5km/h.

Eze’s strike ranked second, with James Ward-Prowse, David Datro Fofana and Alexis Mac Allister making up the rest of the top five.

Fans may be forgiven for not realising this is even an award that the Premier League present given this is just the third time it has been handed out.

Last season the award was won by Said Benrahma, whilst the season before Fernandinho picked up the prize.

Diaby had a very decent first season in England and will be hoping to kick on again next season with the club in the Champions League.

The former Bayer Leverkusen and PSG man has experiences of Europe’s elite club competition having made nine appearances and scored two goals, whilst his 28 games in the Europa League will also be valuable to draw on.

In his last season in Germany prior to making the move to Villa, Diaby managed 28 goal contributions in all competitions according to Transfermarkt.

Therefore, Villa fans can be excited that after a year to get used to the rigours of English football, there is more to come from the winger next season.
