Harry and Meghan's plans for the future could spark rivalry - 'They have different priorities'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s successful unofficial tour in Nigeria last week saw them be showered with love and adoration from fans. However, a royal expert has said this could upset The Firm as they’re no longer working members of the institution.

Meghan Markle and the Duke of Sussex embarked on a three-day trip to Nigeria following an invitation from the country’s chief of defense staff. They were asked to visit after their first official international visit since they toured Africa in 2019 following their royal wedding. Prince Harry, 39, and his wife had a jam-packed schedule, with the Duchess connecting with her heritage. Now, a royal expert says Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s tours may upset those within The Firm, since they chose to step down from the palace four years ago.

The couple spoke to People about their trip, as the dad-of-two revealed it’s not the first one on their agenda.

Harry said: “It is hugely important for us to meet directly with people, supporting our causes and listening, in order to bring about solutions, support and positive change.

“There’s only so much one can do from home and over Zoom, so we look forward to traveling more because the work matters. Whether it’s the Archewell Foundation, Invictus or any of our other causes, there will always be reasons to meet the people at the heart of our work.”

42-year-old Meghan, on the other hand, received many gifts and souvenirs from the trip, and divulged her ‘favorite’.

The former Suits star said: “It was such warm hospitality and it was a really meaningful trip. It was incredibly memorable and special. That alone is the best souvenir to take with us — all the memories we’ve made.”

It seems Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have no desire to stay put, as they want to be “able to be on the ground” with the unofficial tours more in the future.

The Sussexes themselves have not called it a tour, but it ticks all the boxes of what the palace undertakes.

Insiders related to the couple have claimed they didn’t accept the invite to highlight any gaps in The Firm’s workload, as King Charles and Kate Middleton battle cancer.

‘Muddy the waters’

A formal royal staffer has claimed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s ‘tours’ could spark a rivalry with other members, such as Prince William or King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla.

They told The Daily Beast: “Overseas visits might look like jollies, but they are actually a matter of foreign policy.

“They are about promoting the UK and building diplomatic and trade alliances on behalf of the Government.

“Harry and Meghan have different priorities because they are no longer working royals.

“But of course, the vast majority of the world is ignorant of such distinctions, and regard Harry and Meghan as every bit as representative of the Royal Family as William and Charles.”

The source said if they continued, it “could muddy the waters”, and promoting Invictus isn’t what ‘royal tours are about’.
