Exclusive: Derby County and Portsmouth join Championship chase to sign League One play-off hero

Derby County are among the teams eyeing a deal for this League One play-off final hero.

Derby County are readying themselves for a busy summer transfer window ahead of their return to the Championship.

But so far this month, the Rams seem to be missing out on their reported transfer targets, with goalkeeper Viktor Johansson having already sealed a move to Stoke City.

Elsewhere, Josh Windass is in talks over a new Sheffield Wednesday contract, whilst news regarding a return for Ebou Adams having quietened.

But Paul Warne’s side now have a new name on their transfer radars’; Derby County News can exclusively reveal that the Rams have taken an interest in Josh Murphy.

Derby County and Portsmouth eyeing Josh Murphy at Oxford United

The 29-year-old twin brother of Newcastle United’s Jacob, Josh Murphy recently fired Oxford United to promotion from League One.

The wide-man scored both goals as Oxford beat Bolton Wanderers in the Wembley final, taking his goals tally to 10 for the 2023/24 season, with five assists in all competitions.

He’s out of contract in the summer, but Derby County News understands that it’s looking increasingly likely he will leave the U’s, despite his side earning promotion.

Derby County News also understands that fellow League One promotion-winners Portsmouth are keen on former Norwich City and Cardiff City man Murphy, with up to half a dozen Championship clubs now interested.

Earlier this year, reports claimed that the likes of West Brom, Sunderland, and Southampton were also monitoring Murphy’s situation at the Kassam Stadium.
