Every Liverpool player rated for 2023/24 as Jurgen Klopp signing disappoints and star of the season emerges

It has been a funny old season for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s departure from the club has dominated everything since January.

At one stage, a quadruple charge looked genuinely possible. However that fizzled out, with just a Carabao Cup eventually to their name. With Champions League football back next season as well though, the campaign was a success overall. Here’s how we rated the players.

Goalkeepers

Alisson Becker: 8 – Injury disrupted Alisson’s season, with the goalie missing more than two months. Despite the time missed, the 31-year-old retained his excellent level of last season.

Season highlight: A stunning save to deny Miguel Almiron’s volley at St James’ Park

Caoimhin Kelleher: 8 – This was the easily the best season of Kelleher’s career as he stepped up to the void left by Alisson. Kelleher was genuinely superb and didn’t let the Reds down in any of his 26 appearances.

Season Highlight: Starting- and winning – a second Carabao Cup final with Liverpool.

Defence

Conor Bradley: 8 – A breakout season for Bradley, who ended up with 23 appearances to his name. Expertly navigated Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury issues and looks like a future star for Liverpool.

Season Highlight: Scoring a wonderful first Premier League goal at Anfield against Chelsea.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: 7 – Trent started the season brilliantly for Liverpool, but like so many of his teammates, injury hindered him. Came back into things late on in the campaign, but wasn’t quite at his most influential best.

Season Highlight: Bagging a last-minute winner at the Kop end against Fulham to create a noise louder than Tom Cairney had ever heard.

Virgil van Dijk: 9 – In his first year as Liverpool captain Van Dijk hit it out of the park. Said to have ‘held Liverpool’s season together,’ the Dutchman lived up to his ‘incredible’ billing. Back to his best, no doubt about it. Liverpool’s player of the season.

Season Highlight: Making himself the hero with a late, late winner in the Carabao Cup final, the last trophy won under Jurgen Klopp.

Jarell Quansah: 8 – Such was the way Quansah slotted into Liverpool’s starting XI, we’d be tempted to give him a 9 here. But there’s always room for more improvement! Looks for all the world like he’s set for a long career in red.

Season Highlight: Putting in a dominating display against Erling Haaland and Manchester City in March.

Joel Matip: 7 – Once again we didn’t see enough of Matip this season. Nevertheless, the 32-year-old was keeping all other comers out of the team until his season-ending injury in December. A true Liverpool legend who will be sorely missed.

Season Highlight: Earning his 200th Liverpool appearance away to City in November. It should have been so many more.

Joe Gomez: 8 – This was quite probably Gomez’s best of his nine seasons at Liverpool. Without him filling in at right, left and centre-back, the Reds would likely have fallen out of the top four. Looks primed for a big role under Arne Slot.

Season Highlight: His Liverpool performances earning him a first England call-up since 2020 in March.

Andy Robertson: 7 – Another to have his season ruined by injury, Robertson wasn’t as influential as usual. Nevertheless, he still put his stamp on the campaign, scoring back-to-back towards the end of the season.

Kostas Tsimikas: 5 – We’re not sure where it went wrong for Tsimikas this year. But towards the end of the campaign he wasn’t getting a look-in at all. Was unfortunate with injury having initially filled in well for Robertson, put too many lax performances in a season that saw him only play 25 times.

Season Highlight: Whipping in the corner that Van Dijk nodded home to win Liverpool the Carabao Cup.

Midfield

Wataru Endo: 7 – Endo proved his worth to Liverpool this season, surprising many people to hold his own at the club. Faded towards the end of the season but can be proud of his efforts.

Season Highlight: An exceptional performance against Man City at Anfield that left Peter Crouch stunned.

Dominik Szoboszlai: 6 – A lot was expected of Szoboszlai after a rip-roaring start to the campaign. But in truth, his season peaked in September. From there, it has at times been a bit of a struggling for the new signing, who has found himself out of the team recently. Underwhelming.

Season Highlight: Smashed in a Carabao Cup rocket against Leicester, earning some Steven Gerrard comparisons.

Ryan Gravenberch: 6 – Like Szoboszlai, Gravenberch started well – if not quite as spectacularly – but tailed off as the campaign went on. A solid enough first season but will hope for better under Slot.

Season Highlight: Got Liverpool back in-front against Fulham with a well-taken goal at Craven Cottage.

Alexis Mac Allister: 8 – Comfortably the best of Liverpool’s summer signings, Mac Allister absolutely looks the part. Has added goals, creativity and guile to a Reds midfield that was lacking all three. So excited for more.

Season Highlight: A run of 11 goals contributions in 10 games through February and March.

Curtis Jones: 6 – Jones started the season well enough but come the end of it, we very much feel like we’re in the same place as 12 months ago: waiting and wondering if he can kick on. A disappointing step back.

Season Highlight: Two goals and a match-running performance against West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

Harvey Elliott: 8 – He may not have always been in the Liverpool starting XI, but Elliott has had a really excellent season. Having grown into the campaign, only Kevin De Bruyne has provided more assists in 2024.

Season Highlight: Smashing in an injury-time winner at Selhurst Park and celebrating in front of the fans.

Bobby Clark: 7 – It feels fair to include Clark in proceedings give that he played 12 times for Liverpool this season. Impressed with his tidiness in possession and never looked out of place.

Season Highlight: Playing 48 minutes in the Carabao Cup final and looking the absolute business.

Attack

Mohamed Salah: 7 – By January, it had looked like being another stellar season for Salah. Like so many of his teammates though, injury disrupted it. Could never quite get going again and 18 league goals is his lowest ever tally.

Season Highlight: Netting the 200th goal of his Liverpool career against Crystal Palace in December.

Darwin Nunez: 7 – Some may be tempted to go lower with Nunez given his poor end to the season. But he still ends it with an impressive 31 goal contributions. Will be a big player under Slot, no doubt about that.

Season Highlight: Two fantastic late finishes off the bench to turn the game around for Liverpool at St James’ Park.

Cody Gakpo: 7- Ends the season with 16 goals, but with a feeling that he should have done a little more. End of season renaissance gives encouragement for the future.

Season Highlight: Scoring twice as Liverpool thumped Sparta Prague in the Europa League. His only double of the season.

Diogo Jota: 8 – Had Jota managed a full season fit, Liverpool would have won one more trophy. We’ll forever believe that. The 27-year-old was brilliant when he played, scoring 15 times in 32 games.

Season Highlight: A quite brilliant flicked headed assist for Nunez at Brentford when he felt like the best forward in the Premier League.

Luis Diaz: 7 – Took a long time to get going following an injury-hit year in 2022/23. Once he did he was at times electric, at times hair-tearingly frustrating. Needs to improve his end product.

Season Highlight: Busted a gut to blast home an FA Cup third-round winner at Arsenal and send the travelling Kop wild.
