Scott Drew explains what Norchad Omier brings to Baylor

The Baylor Bears have added three players to their roster so far this offseason, including experienced big man Norchad Omier. Who has been a prolific scorer and rebounder throughout his college career after spending two seasons apiece at Arkansas State and Miami before commiting the Bears as a graduate transfer earlier this month.

For his career, Omier has averaged 15.2 points and 11 rebounds per game. Potentially serving as a valuable asset for Baylor on the glass after finishing ninth in the Big 12 in rebounding last season. And in a recent press conference, head coach Scott Drew spoke about what makes Omier so effective as a rebounder and scorer.

“Well I think his toughness, strength, size, I mean the guy’s a beast,” Drew said. “I think Charles Barkley was a really good rebounder at 6’4.5 and you can’t measure toughness and heart, and he has a lot of that and then he has size and athleticism. Speaking more to his rebounding right now, I mean Rico Gathers was an unbelievable rebounder and he wasn’t 6’10, he wasn’t 7-feet (tall).”

Omier joins the Bears with 1,315 career rebounds to his name, leading the Sun Belt in rebounds in his two seasons at Arkansas State and ranking within the top three in rebonds per game in the ACC in the past two years with the Hurricanes. Also earning All-Conference honors in both leagues along with Sun Belt Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year awards.

He’s been a prolific rebounder throughout his career, but also gets the job done on scoring the basketball after averaging 17.0 points per game last season to lead Miami.

“At the same time offensively he’s tough for guys that are bigger to guard because of the speed, and quickness, and perimeter skills,” Drew explained. “And then for smaller guys obviously he can hurt you inside, so he’s a mismatch guy for sure.”

Omier had 12 20+ point scoring outings last season and was a walking double-double, recording 17 of them last season alone. As Drew and the Bears are hoping that he can translate his dominance from the Sun Belt to the ACC along to the Big 12 in the final season of his college career.
