‘Only one person’: Timo Glock tells Williams that 12-point driver is the perfect Logan Sargeant replacement

It’s looking more and more likely that the 2024 Formula 1 season will be Logan Sargeant’s last with Williams Racing.

The 23-year-old American hasn’t been helped by a painfully average car at the start of this year and has had to suffer the ignominy of giving up his car to teammate Alex Albon in Australia.

In a column for Sky Sports DE, former F1 driver Timo Glock has shared who he would like to see replace Logan Sargeant if Williams part ways with him before the end of the campaign.

Glock has looked past the candidate who is being widely touted as Sargeant’s potential replacement – Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

The Italian doesn’t turn 18 until August and there have been suggestions that as soon as he does Williams might make an immediate driver swap.

Instead, Glock believes that the only candidate Williams can consider to take Sargeant’s place is Mick Schumacher.

The 25-year-old is currently the reserve driver for Mercedes and racing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championships.

He has ambitions of returning to Formula 1 after his two-year stint with Haas and a short-term deal with Williams might be his best chance.

Timo Glock thinks Mick Schumacher is the perfect Logan Sargeant replacement for Williams

Few drivers have gone through their motor racing careers with as much expectation on their shoulders as Mick Schumacher.

The son of one of Formula 1’s greatest-ever drivers, Schumacher reached F1 in 2020 after successfully winning the Formula 3 and Formula 2 championships with PREMA.

He was signed up by Haas and in his two seasons with the team scored 12 points, however, in his second campaign he was comfortably second-best to Kevin Magnussen.

Schumacher was replaced by fellow countryman Nico Hulkenberg in 2023 and he’s gone on to show Haas what they were missing when they didn’t have two experienced drivers in the car.

However, Glock believes that Williams may be the team that offers Schumacher the perfect opportunity to return to the paddock.

Unfortunately for Logan Sargeant, it may be at his expense.

Timo Glock fears for Logan Sargeant’s Formula 1 future

Talking about the young American’s situation, Glock said: “I could well imagine that patience will wear thin before then and he will be substituted.

“There was nothing over the weekend where he stood out. I like to put on the German glasses.

“In my eyes, there’s only one person who could step in at the moment: That would be Mick Schumacher.

“There are no active drivers at the moment and there are no youngsters with experience. Mick is the only one who has the experience to replace him this year.”

Mick Schumacher has plenty left to prove in F1

It speaks volumes about how Schumacher and his first F1 teammate Nikita Mazepin fared in Formula 1 that Gene Haas is still reluctant to hire another rookie in the form of Oliver Bearman.

In their first season together, they failed to score a point and while Schumacher did eventually earn a top-ten finish, he never looked capable of kicking on and making the next step up.

Williams team principal James Vowles has reportedly already discounted Schumacher as an option for 2025 but Glock believes no other available drivers would do as well as the 25-year-old if they were asked to replace Sargeant halfway through the season.

It would give Schumacher the opportunity to try and change Vowles’s mind with Toto Wolff also ruling out offering him Lewis Hamilton’s vacant seat.

Instead, he’s working behind the scenes with Antonelli as the Italian tests himself against a former F1 driver before his inevitable step up to the big time somewhere on the grid.
