“We have to thank Celtic”: Why Scotland assistant boss John Carver was raving about the Parkhead club

Steve Clarke is set to announce his Scotland squad for the Euros today and there are sure to be some Celtic players involved in the big summer tournament.

Pundits and former players have all been having their say this week on which of Brendan Rodgers’ Scottish contingent the Scotland boss should book a plane ticket for.

James Forrest has been tipped to make the trip to Germany for his Celtic form late in the season. Anthony Ralston is another who is also being touted for a place due to injuries to Nathan Patterson and Aaron Hickey.

But John Carver wasn’t speaking about any of these players as the Scotland assistant manager publicly thanked Celtic in his press conference yesterday.

Carver thanks Celtic for Callum McGregor injury recovery

Carver was absolutely delighted that Callum McGregor has made a full recovery from his recent Achilles injury.

For Scotland to progress from the group stages McGregor will be key and Carver was over the moon that the Celtic captain is fit and available.

Carver was asked if he has any fears about playing McGregor in the tournament after his recent injury at Celtic and the Scotland assistant boss was in doubt about how he felt about that.

Carver said [Daily Record], “Not as far as I am concerned, no. It’s great news. He is a leader, we know what he is like.

“As it happens I saw him at the weekend and he looked back to his best. We have to thank Celtic for the way they have handled him.

“They have brought him in, gave him game time but not thrown him in at the deep end.

“They have been pretty cautious with him. He looked back to his best at the weekend and that has got to be a bonus.”
