‘I would’: James McFadden tells Steve Clarke to pick Celtic 'wildcard' for Scotland's Euro 2024 squad

After the Scottish season ends, the Celtic fans will need to find something else to do with their Saturday afternoons until the new season kicks off on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of August.

With no Champions League qualifiers to contend with, the majority of the Celtic players will get a longer summer break to rest up and get ready for the new challenges ahead.

But there are some who will be taking part in the Euros in Germany this summer which will help give Celtic fans some interest in football in the close season.

Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston have all been used by Scotland boss, Steve Clarke, at some point in the qualifiers for the tournament.

And whilst McGregor is almost a certainty to go to Germany, questions remain over the two Celtic stars listed above.

But James McFadden has urged Clarke to consider taking one more Celtic player after what he has produced over the last couple of months.

James Forrest is Scotland’s ‘safe wildcard’

Speaking about James Forrest’s impact on Celtic’s title run-in, McFadden urged Clarke to find one more space on the plane that’s heading out to Germany in June.

McFadden said [Open Goal], “I would because I know that we don’t play with wingers but he gives you the option to change it if you need to with wingers.

“But also when he plays that kind of two deeper midfielders and two more advanced, I think he can play in there no problem.

“I think he could play either on the right or the left as the kind of narrow attacking midfielder.
“I think I think James can do that.

“It’s like a wild card because he’s come from nowhere in terms of where he’s been playing but you know what you’re going to get.

“It’s a safe wild card you know what I mean? It’s not like a young boy who’s just burst on the scene and you’re going, ‘Wow get him in and let’s see how he does’.

With extra places up for grabs due to the squads being increased to 26 players, it would make sense for Clarke to consider Forrest.

His experience in playing for club and country could be vital as well as his versatility. Forrest can play the wing-back role as well as a winger and in the attacking midfield areas. [Transfermarkt]

And whilst it has been a couple of years since he’s pulled on the Dark Blue jersey, Forrest knows what representing his country is all about after winning 38 caps in his illustrious football career.
