'It will be': Gary Neville is convinced £50k-a-week Man United player will start the FA Cup final at Wembley

Gary Neville has been having his say on who Erik ten Hag will choose to start in Manchester United’s FA Cup final on Saturday.

After a disappointing league campaign concluded last weekend, Erik ten Hag perhaps has one last chance to save his job at Old Trafford.

It could well be that the Dutchman will stay in charge regardless, but speculation is now rife with Mauricio Pochettino being linked with the post just hours after his Chelsea departure.

Of course, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side aren’t exactly the team you’d be hoping to face in the ‘last chance saloon’.

Having secured another title last Sunday, City will be aiming to complete the double, a fairly modest feat by their standards.

And if Manchester United are going to stand any chance of succeeding, they will have to get both their tactics and their team selection spot on.

That being said, Gary Neville has been discussing some of the dilemmas Erik ten Hag will face on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast.

Gary Neville thinks Erik ten Hag will choose Jonny Evans over Raphael Varane at Wembley

Speaking on the podcast, Neville discussed the conundrum that Ten Hag faces in central defence, an issue that has marred United’s entire season.

Also on the podcast, Jamie Carragher was convinced that United needed to field both Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane together.

However, with their recent injuries in mind, Neville thought that would be a huge gamble, and tipped Jonny Evans for a start.

He explained: “I think it will be Jonny Evans and Martinez. I can’t think he will play Varane and Martinez, both of them having not played, that’s a massive risk.”

Of course, a lot of Manchester United fans will probably just be grateful to see Casemiro relinquished from the back line, a solution that doesn’t have legs.

There will be some who believe that Varane and Martinez, the club’s strong partnership, should be entrusted regardless of their readiness in this one off game.

But £50k-a-week Jonny Evans has so rarely put a foot wrong, a player who can be depended on in games as big as this.

That being said, the situation definitely delineates why United need to add to their centre-back department in the summer.

But with the league season now finished, Jeff Stelling recently claimed it was an entirely different player United player who’s been the biggest disappointment of the season.
