'That is a frustration': David Prutton wants Nottingham Forest star to 'stick to what he's good at' next season

David Prutton has called on one Nottingham Forest star to go back to basics during the 2024/25 campaign.

The Reds ended their latest season in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Burnley – and ensured survival from relegation.

Chris Wood scored twice during the game, with Forest racing into a two-goal lead inside 14 minutes of the clash.

Forest needed a huge swing in terms of goals to be overtaken by Luton and the Hatters actually lost their final game of the season 4-2.

After the game, Prutton has been quizzed on one Forest star – and he’s delivered some advice to him ahead of next season.

What David Prutton has said about Anthony Elanga

The 22-year-old has been in the thick of the action for Forest this season and he’s done a really useful job at the City Ground.

Elanga checked in for £15 million from Manchester United and has finished with five goals and nine assists.

His last assist came on Sunday when he teed up Wood after just 78 seconds to open the scoring for Forest.

Prutton enjoyed what he saw and he’s called on Elanga to produce that sort of magic more often next season.

He told the Forest Focus podcast: “When you’re a winger with the attributes that he’s got I don’t know why you wouldn’t just do that every time. I can’t think for a second why he wouldn’t. There’s no way Nuno is saying, ‘Just do that once and then calm down’, I can’t see that at all. So, that is a frustration.

“It boils down to decision-making as well and that’s probably why we’re talking about a Forest side that perhaps isn’t quite there with consistency yet. If Elanga does that probably seven or eight times a game and if you’re Chris Wood, it’s going to simplify his game too.

“It sounds a bit condescending when you break it down but football is a simple game that can be overcomplicated sometimes. Elanga needs to stick to what he’s good at.”

Prutton is right on Elanga but Forest man has done well

The former Forest midfielder has hit the nail on the head here, with Prutton making a very valid point about Elanga.

The youngster is still learning his trade and this is the first season where he’s played regular football all season.

To get 14 goal contributions is pretty good though and Forest have got themselves a steal with Elanga.

The challenge – as it is with every young player – is producing the goods on a consistent basis.

Elanga is a Sweden international and having made 55 appearances for Manchester United, he can clearly play.

The winger fits the profile of the type of player that Forest should be pursuing and he can look back on this campaign with some fondness.

Next season will be another big one for Elanga at Forest and he’d be wise to listen to Prutton and strip things back to basics more frequently.
