'Legend' who used prison to help his film roles dies - 'Spirit as vibrant as the sun'

Actor Richard Foronjy, known for his roles as police officers in films including The Morning After, Midnight Run, and Carlito’s has sadly died at 86.

The movie star, who served eight years in prison before turning to acting, passed away on Sunday night. After being released at the age of 32, the star specialized in playing cops and bad guys, as his real life experiences helped transform his performances.

Richard Foronjy dies at 86

Foronjy had his first starring role in 1981 crime drama, Prince Of The City. His first party in a film came in 1973 film Serpico playing a cop killer.

He then went on to star in the 1986 psychological thriller The Morning After. In 1988, he played mobster Tony Darvo in the movie Midnight Run, alongside Robert De Niro.

“Richard Foronjy, an actor of unparalleled talent and versatility, has bid farewell to the stage and screen, leaving behind a legacy that will always be a part of cinematic history,” an obit by the McHoul Funeral Home in New York read.

“Richard was a legend in every sense. He has left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. With a spirit as vibrant as the sun, he embraced life with unparalleled vigor and enthusiasm.

“Richard’s outgoing nature and infectious joy illuminated every room he entered, leaving a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. Richard Foronjy’s legacy of living life to the fullest will continue to inspire generations to come,” the obit continued.

He is survived by his son Charles Foronjy, daughter Susan Argentina, daughter Christine Argentina, and his youngest son Richard Foronjy.

Tributes pour in for the star

As the sad news breaks, colleagues and fans have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to pay tribute to the star.

“Even as a small character in Ghostbusters 2, I still remember his lines I hope he is resting in peace and my condolences go to the family Rest in Peace Richard Foronjy,” wrote one fan.

Another said: “Goodbye to the colossal Richard Foronjy, one of those supporting actors who made each film bigger.”
