'Definitely': Ange Postecoglou confirms the signing he's hoping to make at Tottenham this summer

Ange Postecoglou has admitted he wants Tottenham Hotspur to make a signing in one key area this summer.

Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in a post-season friendly in Melbourne today.

It saw Ange Postecoglou return to his homeland as Tottenham suffered a 5-4 defeat in a penalty shootout, with Bryan Gil missing his spot kick.

Despite a disappointing end to today’s friendly, all eyes will be firmly fixed on what looks set to be a crucial summer transfer window for Postecoglou.

Spurs made astute signings last summer, picking up the likes of Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison, with all three improving their starting XI.

Postecoglou will be hoping for players that can make a similar impact this time around and the Aussie boss is keen to address one area of his squad.

Postecoglou confirms signing he wants at Tottenham

Speaking to Football.London‘s Alasdair Gold following today’s post-season friendly, Postecoglou was asked about getting business done early this summer.

“Yeah, look it is important. I think it works better Ali. Last year it certainly benefited us in having a couple of players in early to be with the whole squad.

“Again looking at the schedule this year with international commitments, we’re not going to get them all back for the start of pre-season, but if we can get ones in early. It’s easier said than done. Everyone wants to get business done early, everyone is keen to bring players in but the reality is that it takes a little bit of time.

“The good thing for us is that we know what we need to do, we’ve had the plan in place for a while and it’s just about now going through that process.”

On bolstering his attacking options, Postecoglou added: “Yeah, absolutely. It’s no secret. You saw the way we finished the season.

“We obviously lost Richy and Timo [Werner] as well with injuries but we’re fairly light in that area. We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up.

“We’re in Europe as well next year so we’ll have more games and it’s definitely an area of the park we’ll need to strengthen.”

Tottenham’s reported attacking targets

It remains unclear whether Spurs will prioritise a new winger or opt to bring in an out-and-out striker this summer.

Postecoglou has struggled for options through the middle in recent weeks, leading to Dejan Kulusevski playing a false nine.

Tottenham reportedly remain keen on Brentford’s Ivan Toney while there have also been claims that they are planning talks with Feyenoord talisman Santiago Gimenez.

In the wide areas, Athletic’s Nico Williams is said to be of interest and Pedro Neto has admirers at the club.
