8-goal striker & 'fabulous' gem: 5 successful loanees Sheffield Wednesday should now target - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday could explore the loan market once again after a successful January transfer window.

Danny Rohl enjoyed a reasonably positive first transfer window at Sheffield Wednesday, despite missing out on key target Duncan McGuire.

The Owls didn’t spend a penny, but the loan additions of James Beadle, Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda proved a huge hit.

Wednesday are reportedly eager to bring all three back to the club, and they surely won’t be afraid to delve back into the loan market to bolster their squad this summer.

There have been a number of loan stars who have impressed in the Championship this season, and are likely to earn themselves moves to ‘bigger’ clubs or returns to their parent club.

While some are unlikely to return to the second tier, there are plenty that Sheffield Wednesday could look to, to replicate their 2023/24 campaign elsewhere.

Here are five of this season’s Championship loan stars that the Owls could sign for themselves…

5 loanees Sheffield Wednesday can bring back to the Championship

Andrew Moran

Andrew Moran joined Blackburn from Brighton last summer.

The midfielder went onto score four goals and provide nine assists across all competitions, with John Dahl Tomasson hailing him as ‘intelligent’ and ‘very ambitious’.

Moran’s contract with the Seagulls doesn’t expire until 2027 and he could instead be sent back out on loan.

Having already helped develop Beadle, Brighton could see Hillsborough as a good place to send their youngsters.

Liam Delap

Liam Delap bagged ten goal contributions in 26 starts for Hull City, making a key contribution to their bid for a place in the play-offs.

The striker has returned to Manchester City now but it is clear that he is miles away from making his mark on the first-team.

The 6 ft 1 striker could be a real threat for Wednesday, however reports have also claimed that Man City could look to sell him rather than loan him out.

Sam Greenwood

Sam Greenwood joined Middlesbrough on loan from Leeds United last summer and went onto claim five goals and three assists in 25 starts.

The 22-year-old – who can play out wide or up front – seems unlikely to feature in Leeds’ plans next season, even if they aren’t promoted.

Greenwood could be loaned out once again and is likely to prefer a move in the north, having been born in Sunderland.

Brooke Norton-Cuffy

Brooke Norton-Cuffy joined Millwall in his fourth loan spell away from Arsenal.

The youngster claimed six goal contributions in 40 appearances from full-back, as well as making the most successful dribbles in the Lions’ squad (50).

He also won the U19s Euros in 2022 and now features for England U21s.

With Ben White impressing for Arsenal, it seems unlikely that he will be able to force his way into the senior team. The Gunners will now have to make a decision on what to do with him next season.

Ashley Phillips

Ashley Phillips was extremely highly-rated when he joined Tottenham for £3 million last summer.

The 18-year-old was then sent out on loan to Plymouth in January and has since earned high praise, with manager Ian Foster labelling him‘excellent’ and ‘fabulous’.

Phillips still has the likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin ahead of him in the pecking order at Spurs, so he could well be sent back out on loan instead.
