'Phenomenal' manager linked with Chelsea job now offered lucrative new deal, still might leave - journalist

One candidate to replace Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea manager has now been offered a lucrative new contract to stay at his current club.

Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino yesterday caught a lot of fans by surprise considering the improvement his team had made.

Pochettino’s team finished the season strongly, providing reason to believe that next season they could qualify for the Champions League and begin their climb back to the top.

However, those high up at Chelsea no longer considered the relationship with their manager tenable, given Pochettino had publicly questioned the club’s decisions.

Despite still being fairly early in their ownership of the club, Todd Boehly and his colleagues have already proven that they are not afraid to make bold calls, whether they are well received or not.

That being said, Chelsea will now be swiftly undergoing their new manager search, with the intention of making a timely appointment.

Right now it seems as if there are a few frontrunners, all stemming from the Premier League.

Newly-promoted Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is a strong candidate, as are Brentford’s Thomas Frank and departing Brighton & Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi.

Kieran McKenna offered new contract by Ipswich Town after strong links to Chelsea job

It’s unclear who is considered the number one front-runner right now, but Ipswich’s McKenna is said to be liked.

And given that news, it’s now being reported that the new Premier League club have offered their ‘phenomenal’ boss a lucrative new deal.

Ipswich would be understandably devastated to lose McKenna after being promoted, and journalist Charlie Wyett has just been explaining their stance.

Sharing the update on X, Wyett admitted that the new contract offer may not be enough to keep McKenna at the club.

He said: “Ipswich have offered Kieran McKenna a huge new contract due to the interest from Man Utd, Chelsea and Brighton but it might not be enough to keep him.”

Of course, it would be something of a risk for Chelsea to appoint McKenna anyway.

Boehly and his team clearly want quick success, something they probably believe their investment deserves.

And whilst the 38-year-old is immensely talented and destined for the top of the game, he would surely endure tough periods in his first ‘top’ job.

All that being said, it has just been revealed that one well-respected manager wouldn’t be interested in the Chelsea job.
