Steven Davis singles out the Rangers player who can ‘cause Celtic problems’ at Hampden

Steven Davis knows what it takes to defeat Celtic in an Old Firm cup final.

Whilst the legendary Rangers Hall of Famer was only 17-years-old the last time these two teams met in a Scottish Cup showpiece, Davo scored in the 2-1 Hampden League Cup win of 2011.

It’s just one moment from the highlight reel of big Rangers goals belonging to Steven Davis, whose presence on the pitch at Ibrox has been sorely missed.

Now, after officially hanging up his boots, the Rangers legend has been singling out one star who he believes can play a crucial role against Celtic at Hampden.

Davis backs Rangers talent v Celtic

Steven Davis is currently back with the Irish FA doing his coaching badges as he looks to move into a career in management.

The ex-Rangers midfielder has made no bones about his desire to follow a career as a football manager with a brief interim stint in charge at Ibrox only ‘whetting his appetite’.

From that two game spell in charge of Rangers, Davis’s legacy comes in the shape of one Ross McCausland.

Handed his breakthrough under the Ulster legend, McCausland hasn’t looked back despite an injury disrupting a bright season in Glasgow.

Now, Davis is tipping his countryman to be a crucial player in the hunt for silverware as Rangers prepare to face arch rivals Celtic in the Scottish Cup.

“(McCausland) has started the last few games and made an impact with his goal and assists,” said Davis, as quoted by the Belfast Telegraph.

“Ross had picked up an injury and missed a few games and missed the international trip in March but I saw the manager (Philippe Clement) saying he thought Ross was getting back to what his best level was.

“I think he can certainly cause Celtic problems. There will be interesting battles all over the pitch and wide areas are key.”

McCausland makes NI squad

Steven Davis has also been talking about Ross McCausland after the Rangers winger was called up for the Northern Ireland squad

Young McCausland, who has just turned 21-year-old, made his Northern Ireland debut in a European Qualifying defeat to Finland earlier in the season.

With the winger regarded as one of the brightest talents in the Northern Ireland set-up, 140-times capped Windsor Park legend Davo has urged the kid to keep progressing.

“I think Ross has done really well,” said Davis. “Obviously he has grasped his opportunity and when Philippe came in early on you could tell that Ross would be a player he liked because of the way he plays and what the manager was asking.

“He has played in some really big games this season and that experience will be good for him.

“He has also made his debut for the international team and really the responsibility is on Ross to make sure he hopefully finishes the season on a high on Saturday and then does well with the Northern Ireland team in the games in June and then resets and pushes himself in pre-season to make sure he keeps progressing.”

Ross McCausland has made 37 appearances for Rangers this season, scoring four goals and laying on five assists.
