Report: One key factor appears to be holding up Derby County's move for Ebou Adams this summer

A key factor appears to be holding up Derby County’s move for Ebou Adams this summer.

Adams enjoyed an incredible loan spell at Derby after arriving from Cardiff City in January transfer window.

The 28-year-old’s relentless energy and ferocious tackling ability helped the Rams win promotion to the Championship.

Paul Warne’s men only conceded nine goals in his 17 appearances for the club as he brought a defensive steeliness to a midfield that was seriously lacking.

As a result, the Gambian quickly rose to prominence as a fan favourite with supporters chanting “Sign him up” at every opportunity.

Adams has now returned to his parent club Cardiff City following the completion of his loan spell however, it was reported weeks ago that the Rams were readying a £250,000 bid, which fell short of their £500,000 valuation.

It remains to be seen how much Derby owner David Clowes is willing to spend to land the midfielder, but there is one key factor currently holding up any potential move for Warne’s side.

Cardiff City need to resolve Erol Bulut situation before sorting Ebou Adams’ future

Cardiff City are currently at a crossroads over the future of manager Erol Bulut.

The Turkish tactician impressed in his first campaign in charge of the club, guiding the Bluebirds to a respectable 12th-place finish despite many tipping them for relegation in pre-season.

According to Wales Online, a contract offer is on the table for Bulut but a major stumbling block in a deal appears to be the length of his contract, with the 49-year-old believing he deserves long-term assurances, something the club haven’t guaranteed.

The same outlet has also reported that until the managerial situation is resolved in South Wales, Adams won’t be able to move on as they’ll need to decide whether he’ll get game time next season.

Ultimately, Derby won’t be able to pursue a deal for Adams properly until Cardiff have their managerial plans set in stone.

If Bulut stays, Adams is likely to leave

Adams may have impressed at Derby in League One and Bulut congratulated him on his promotion however, the midfield destroyer is unlikely to stay put if the Turkish manager stays.

He only made three Championship starts for Cardiff last term and was largely frozen out of his plans with Joe Ralls, Ryan Wintle, Aaron Ramsey and Rubin Colwill all preferred over him.

Bulut did say he’ll assess the players’ future, although given his contract expires in 2025 and he wants guaranteed first-team football, Adams will be attracted by the prospect of joining the Rams permanently, especially after claiming he enjoyed his time at the club every single day.

Once he’s given the green light on his future, Derby will need to agree on a suitable fee for him, as paying £500,000 for a player out of contract next year is pretty steep.
