Sky Sports pull brakes on Rangers transfer reports with Clement left ‘weighing up options’

If the last few days are anything to go by, Rangers fans are in for quite the summer of transfer links.

There have been a number of names mentioned already and we haven’t even heard the final whistle of the domestic season yet.

If anyone wants to get an insight into how eager the Rangers support is for change they need only look at the swathe of transfer reports already surrounding what Philippe Clement recently described as ‘quite a rebuild’.

But there is one transfer report which has seen the brakes pulled as Rangers links to a former Academy star are not quite as advanced as was initially reported.

Rangers transfer reports ‘premature’

Rangers fans would’ve seen some rather surprising reports that Motherwell and Scotland goalkeeper Liam Kelly has agreed to re-join the club.

A product of the Rangers youth Academy, Kelly never got his chance at Ibrox but the 28-year-old remains one of the most highly-rated stoppers in the country.

With Jon McLaughlin nailed on to leave the club in the summer, and Kelly an automatic homegrown option, it’s a deal which makes sense on a lot of levels.

But despite claims that Rangers are closing in on a deal for Liam Kelly, leading sports broadcaster Sky Sports have pulled the brakes on a deal.

Claiming that whilst it’s true Rangers have held talks with Kelly, the report suggests that Philippe Clement is still very much weighing up his options.

Sky believes that the suggestion an agreement has already been struck is ‘premature’ with this situation certainly one to watch going forward.

Out of contract at Motherwell come the end of the season, Kelly has also been linked with a move to Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Change in Ibrox goalkeeper position?

The reports come at an interesting time for Rangers goalkeepers.

With current number one and Player of the Year Jack Butland being snubbed for an England call-up to Euro 2024, it’s cast some doubt around the stopper’s future.

Against the backdrop of injuries south of the border, the decision not to call up Butland may have the goalkeeper reconsidering his England chances at Rangers.

Then there is Liam Kelly’s fellow Academy graduate Robby McCrorie, who has not had a sniff behind Butland all season long.

There’s a feeling that McCrorie needs minutes to progress, not least from Scotland manager Steve Clarke, and a move for Kelly will bring the goalkeeper’s position into question.
