Oreo is exploring a 'Zero Sugar' version, and people think it's a great idea

Oreo just revealed they are considering making a ‘Zero Sugar’ version of their famous cookies for release in the US.

It comes as the food giant has just released a new Sour Patch Kids collaboration, with cookies that taste like candy.

Oreo considering ‘Zero Sugar’ cookie

The news was revealed by Instagram foodie Markie Devo, who spotted a survey link on Oreo’s social platforms about a Zero Sugar cookie. Surveys are usually done to see if there would be interest in a new product, so he decided to reach out to them.

Oreo confirmed that they are considering the idea in a statement, saying: “We’re excited to confirm that we are exploring the creation a Zero Sugar version of AMERICA’S FAVORITE COOKIE.”

“The OREO brand is always looking for ways to expand our playful product portfolio to meet the needs of our consumers and we’ve made it our mission to ensure this innovation delivers on the signature OREO experience fans know and love,” they continued.

Oreo said that Zero Sugar “will not be available for dunking in milk in 2024” but told people to stay tuned for more details as they continue to “mix up something special” in years to come.

The cookie brand has just teased two fake Oreo flavors, and people think that’s another test to determine how popular they would be.

Sugar-free Oreos launched in China

The idea may be new in America, but Oreo actually launched Zero-Sugar cookies in China in August 2021. They replaced traditional sugars like sucrose and glucose with a substitute called maltitol, which has 75–90% of the sweetness of sucrose.

That means the cookies still had a sweet flavor without the calories, only giving a slight difference in taste to regular Oreos. However, they didn’t get the expected reaction.

“The reaction of the consumer has been a little bit disappointing … for one reason or the other, the consumers feel it is not the real thing,” Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dirk Van de Put told Reuters.

That doesn’t mean the cookies wouldn’t be popular in the US though. Sugar alternatives, such as diet fizzy drinks, aren’t so popular in China, which could explain why they didn’t go down very well.

One Statista report reveals that in 2021, sugar-free drinks accounted for just 3.5 percent of China’s soft beverage market. Five years earlier, in 2016, that was just 1%, proving there isn’t a big market for sugar substitutes.

People think it’s a great idea

In the US, people are already really excited about the idea of Zero Sugar Oreos.

One person commented: “My mom would LOVE these as shes diabetic and has been wanting Oreos so bad.”

“This would be amazing,” said another.

A third person added: “I would love this! I love sugar so adding some no sugar options would be nice.”

“I’m a diabetic so I would buy them,” someone else added.
